29. Rf1 is really the only other choice of note as far as I can tell, and I'm not really seeing anything of note for white.

In my own notes to the 22...hg5 line, 29.Qc8+ wasn't my first choice, which I thought was insufficiently complex. However, White had better than 30.Qe8?! in 30.Bxf7 Kf7 31.Qxb7. I just don't think it led to enough for white. 


Interestingly, I don't think either side can profitably deviate from that e-mail game until move 29.

It's entirely possible that Black may be able to find some lines that fade into a draw, but White retains such real practical chances that White can still win correspondence games with the Bayonet.

The idea is definitely a shock, but it's clear from just checking it initially it has very serious bite.

I'll have to check it over before making any decisions, but it's nice to see some hope.

H. Van Unen- S. Lakatos, E-Mail 2008 looked fine for black, but maybe white has something better.

It has been thought that 21...gh is a mistake, and that 21...Nxe6 is better (e.g. 22. hg Nxd5 23. ed Nxg5 unclear, Ftacnik).  There is also 13...c6.

I'm sorry, I think I may have misread the date of the game I meant to reference. 

Looking at my own notes and database (rather than a specialised database that I had just downloaded) I see a 2009 game that was played at Corus Wijk aan Zee:

Eh?  14...Nh5 and perhaps 14...Re8 (both subsequently played by Radjabov) have been thought to be better than the 14...fe which Radjabov played in 2005.

I've recently played the Bayonet as White a couple times in correspondence and managed to get promising positions. 

I've followed Van Wely-Radjabov (2005) as the model for White's play. I know that Van Wely himself deviated from that game in 2007 against the same opponent, but I can't find a major improvement for Black.

Why is the Bayonet less popular than other KID lines these days?  It seems that white should score very well here, even if practical results don't bare that out. (It also seems to me that even very strong players of the white side seem to want to avoid the most critical lines only to reach less favorable positions anyway.)

10. g3 is simply another try.

That being said, I'm not seeing white advantages in 10. Re1 provided black just plays along the lines that Radjabov has (12...Kh8).

I recall a recent thread on the 10.g3 variation in this Forum (I can't remember which thread), and the conclusion was that Black has more than one way to equalise at present.

I agree that the variation merits further investigation as it is relatively unexplored in comparison to 10.Re1.

Agreed. It is noteworthy that Markos claims that the Bayonet does not offer any advantage for White in 'Beat the KID'.
