Dangerous Weapons: Flank Openings has an excellent chapter on this line, plus a lot of fun other stuff for English players.

And I'll just add a couple of things:

(1) I have tried 3.g3 as you mentioned & as recommended by Davies in his book on the Reti.  My handful of games along this line have turned out to be mediocre at best.  I rarely get something approximating a 'reversed Benoni' & usually just wind up with a dubious pawn-structure.

(2) I forget the source, but I seem to recall reading that one of the Byrne brothers commented that he "could never understand why anyone would make a present of their d4-square" (very approx. quotation).

Anyway, I know that (other than 3.g3), there have been recommendation articles about the Buecher-esque 3.c5 (?!) but that doesn't look like a very reliable choice to me.

I'm not sure why the "!?" -- it's long been a standard view that 2...d4 is one of Black's best moves, and should be sufficient to equalize.

Hi Guys,

i don't know, wether this variation was already discussed extensivly or not, but i want to ask all you reti-players how you get an advantage against 1.Nf3 d5 2.c4 d4!?
I myself did quite some research and analysis on it, but i am not sure how to get the edge. At the moment i would probably try 3.g3 with a Benoni-like system, white being one tempo up. But things are not so clear and 3.c5 or 3.b4 seem quite interesting.

So: what's your favourite line against it, and: do you think you get advantage with your lines?
