This game shows Drasko holding a very strong young GM at bay in the Winawer. Drasko is a French defence expert whose games are nearly always worthy of attention. He is one of the few GMs who still places his faith in answering 7 Qg4 with 0-0.

Thanks, I will have to look at that suggestion when I find the time. It certainly appears more logical than Drasko's very passive-looking 14. h4 c4 15.Be2 h6 16. Bd2 Kh8 17. Qc1 Ng8.

P.S. I just discovered that I actually faced 14.h4 in an internet blitz game even before I saw the Vallejo Pons-Drasko game. My game continued 14...h6 15.Be3 (probably dubious because now ...Nf5 comes with tempo) 15...c4 16.Be2 Nf5 17.Bf4? and now instead of 17...Nfxd4 with a clear advantage I played the "thematic" 17...Nd6?! and won in the end.

14.h4!? has not been played before as far as I'm aware. Interestingly both Khalifman and earlier Kindermann (Französisch Winawer Band 1: 7.Dg4 0-0) point out that the alternative move order 13...c4?! 14.Be2 Qf8 is dubious because White will then avoid castling and attack with h4, without fearing the exchange sacrifice on f3. Having said all that, Drasko managed to hang on until he moved a crucial defensive piece away with 37...Ne8?. Maybe White could have played better, i.e. around move 22 I'm tempted to retain the f3-knight and try to get g2-g4 in.

To conclude, I think this whole ...Qf8 line could use an update from GM McDonald!


What about 14. ... Qg7 ?

Well ... depressing ... if you're playing the French you IMHO more or less accept that a draw with black is ok. 
You know, I'm playing the Tarrasch with ...c5 / ...Qxd5. And there is that line with Qxd4. Playing vs that line THAT's depressing for me.

Concerning the 12...Qa5-line:
I did not have any serious problems in several corr. games in that line. I followed Kindermanns recommendations and everything worked well. But you may be right that black "objectively" does not have more than a draw in that line. 
OTB and at my level I can say that - as in so many french positions - if white presses a little bit too too hard, collapse will some soon. And that does  happen. More often than you may think.

I think that 21...Rf5 is more or less the only move in this position. I'm not sure that black can hold the game with the other moves. But I have to admit that I did not invest too much time analyzing the other moves, as I simply "felt" that 21... Rf5 is the "right" move, when I looked at the line.

This line with 13...Qf8 is critical; if it doesn't work I don't see much life in 7...0-0. There are several interesting points to think about in those three Drasko games.

1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Bb4 4. e5 Ne7 5. a3 Bxc3+ 6. bxc3 c5 7. Qg4 O-O 8. Bd3 f5 9. exf6 Rxf6 10. Bg5 Rf7 11. Qh5 g6 12. Qd1 Nbc6 13. Nf3 Qf8:

Caruana-Drasko 14. O-O c4 15. Be2 h6 16. Bc1 Qg7
Black's move order seems to encourage White's main plan of 17.a4 followed by Ba3 and usually h3. After 16...Qg7 Black is not ready to prevent Bd6 in either of the two usual ways (...Qb8 or ...Rd8). Maybe Caruana thinks Black's ideas with 17.a4 g5!? and delaying ...Bd7 are OK, so instead he allows the thematic Bd7/Rd8/Bc8 anyway (a prophylactic manouvre that went unmentioned in Khalifmans "White According to Anand" series). But then why did Drasko switch move order after this successful opening? Maybe he just likes to vary sligthly and present a moving target.

Before I saw this post I actually thought the most accurate move order was 16...Bd7 17.a4 Rd8! 18.Ba3 Bc8, played successfully by Drasko (!) and Malakhatko. But what do I know...

Berg-Drasko 14. O-O c4 15. Be2 h6 16. Bc1 Kh7 17. a4 Bd7 18. Ba3 Qb8 
Here Drasko went straight for the other way of covering d6 with ...Kh7 and ...Qb8. Berg's calm buildup with Qd2, h3, Rae1, Nh2-g4 etc. seems to give him a comfortable game (note Berg is also a Winawer expert with black) but in the end tactical blunders decide the game (45...Qf7? and 46...Re7??). Black could hang on with 45...Qc6 (controlling a8) 46.Ra1 Kg8 but White is still the one pushing of course.
19...Qc7 may be technically a novelty; earlier Black has played 19...Nf5 first. Khalifman then follows this game:

Note how White did not committ to an early h3, instead meating ...g5 more aggressively with h2-h4. Maybe the logic is that h4 doesn't fit when Black's queen is on or close to g7, ready to exploit a half-open g-file, but with the queen on b8 or c7 that's less of a problem.

Well, the bad news for fans of the Winawer with 7 Qg4 0-0 is that Drasko played it twice more in the European and lost both games. If GM Milan Drasko, with all his long experience of the Winawer, cannot defend this line then things are indeed looking bad. The main factors seems to be that White's king is just so much safer than Black's and thus White can manoeuvre patiently using his space advantage and extra bishop until Black's kingside cracks. (Admittedly Drasko's opponents were higher rated.)

It is not hard to understand why interest is shifting away from 7...0-0 to other lines, such as the Poisoned Pawn. It will be interesting to see if Drasko persists with 7....0-0 in future events.

This game shows Drasko holding a very strong young GM at bay in the Winawer. Drasko is a French defence expert whose games are nearly always worthy of attention. He is one of the few GMs who still places his faith in answering 7 Qg4 with 0-0.
