Seems to me that presenting the moves of what he considers the main line would take about the same time. Thanks all you guys for saving my money on D's stuff.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

I've seen quite a few of Roman's videos but I decided to 'roll the dice'.   I lost.... Undecided

I thought that the inclusion of  Rybka would keep the analysis "honest".  I remember an endgame video of his explaining simple King and Pawn endings that was SO awful it made me laugh out loud.
The basics...  badly explained and filled with egregious errors.

I had also hoped that Perelshteyn would do most of the actual work since Roman appears to do less and less.  So, when Roman introduces himself (and the Caro-Kann) but then lets Eugene do the actual explaining and analysis, I thought my gamble had paid off.
But after the first 50 minutes or so, which were good... Roman returns and "takes over" the DVD.

Roman comes in to say things like "We won't look at this because we cannot cover everything in a DVD."
But you can cover some things!
How is that an excuse to not work at all?
What about...maybe 10 minutes to recommend a line to study against the Panov?
Nope.  No time!
Time for excuses?  Oh yes.
Time to even introduce theory?  Oh no.

Or another of his favorites "the theory is good for black in this line and we don't have anything to add...so just look up the theory in books or in the database."  Roll Eyes
What about presenting the theory?
At least show the moves?
Nah...find it on your own.
Form your own conclusions.  He cannot be bothered.

This is not just lazy, its dishonest.
I've seen Martin, Vigorito, Ziegler, and others give the basic outlines of an opening in not much time at all.  Granted, it lacks real depth but it at least gets you started off.

Apparently Roman feels there is "no time" to cover even the basic theory of several key lines, but there's plenty of time to ramble, spout platitudes, stare blankly at the screen and say "umm...ahh..." while trying to remember the move, and then explain why he's NOT doing his job for the Nth time.

I'll never buy ANYTHING with Dzindzi's name on it again.

And now, it seems Chessbase will start a kind of second edition DVD´s like Chess Stars books with the diference that is only for one hour and half more!! Will the first buyers buy this again?  Shocked

Dzindzi stuff like he usually say is for lazy players and we need to provide reviews about lazy authors...

Long time ago I heard that Schiller is a guy who like to wrote lots of books and use havaian shirts and likes the sun and the beach   Grin
I think his best book was the one on the Caro-Kann!  Grin

Can't say I'm familiar with Dzindzi's stuff, but if the comparisons to Schiller are at all accurate, I also agree completely. I bought a couple of Schiller books, when I first started studying chess, and even then I could figure out that they were junk. It's amazing how people like that are still able to sell books after so long.  Sad

I never liked the presentations of the Roman's series. I tried to watch some of his videos and after first 5 minutes i get bored. Then I decided to check what is going on. Simply grabbed his lines and put in CB. Then started my good GM level friends (Rybka and Fritz Smiley) and saw that everything is simply rubish. Both programs smile on his main lines. I was curious and tried to give them more time even i made some moves to help them. At the end after 2 days of long thinking they showed that Roman is completely wrong. All this was about a year or more ago. Since then I decided that i will never watch such material...

I notice you rarely find reviews of Dzinzi's DVD's by the usual sources on the web. His stuff really needs to be exposed before it sells.

And yes he assumes his audience are idiots that know nothing about the opening he happens to be pitching at the time. My question is has he ever addressed the critical responses to any of the openings he advocates? On reflection perhaps he did so on his DVD against the Pirc.

Huh... You definitely did say something. Cheesy
I agree. I have seen a lot of awful videos from Dzindzi. Watching his videos, I often get the feeling of being treated as complete idiot.
My question is: are there any good works by him? For example, Chess Openings For _Black_, Explained is good?

For all of you who don't want to read my long review, let me just tell you to save your time and money.  Read any decent book, watch Shirov's (rather narrow) DVD, watch Andrew Martin's (rather good) DVD.  Find a copy of Nigel Davies old video on the Caro-Kann! Anything is better.

This feculent trash is not even CLOSE to as good as Schiller's book on the Caro-Kann and that is saying something! Wink

RE: "I looked at this. Quite good, but better is to buy Houska's book. "

That is a massive understatement!!

I am not kidding when I say watching "Dude, where's my car?" will teach you as much about facing the Panov-Botvinnik as this DVD.  But let's start from the beginning...

Against the mainline 3.Nc3, the DVD suggests the same line Houska recommended (but with much, much less analysis).
Eugene does a nice job of explaining the basic ideas in the mainlines (but does overlook some key responses by White).  This part is quite good.  However, this is the only good section of the DVD.

The DVD doesn't cover Advance variation in any depth at all.
After the sharp 4.Nc3, they simply list the first moves from the ever-quoted Topalov-Gelfand 2002 and basically say "its in all the books, go get one. We can't cover this in a DVD."
They don't cover major sidelines (such as 7.Be3) at all nor do they ever explain the middlegame plans or suggest WHICH books to read or WHICH games to study from the database.   Phenomenally lazy.

But what about 4.Nf3, a.k.a. the popular Short System? They give about 2-3 more moves for Black ( ...Ne7, ...Nd7, etc.)  and then Roman says Black is 'solid' and that White doesn't really have any advantage.
That's it.
Once again we get no common tactics to look out for, no games to look at or study, no standard middlegame motifs, nothing.  Just a handful of moves from mainline theory, then kick in the rear.

And yes, that's ALL the coverage of the Advance CK.
Nothing about f4 moves, nothing about 4.Be3, etc. etc. etc.

But wait, it actually gets worse!!

The DVD does even not look at the Panov-Botvinnik!
Quote Roman:  "We are not going to cover 4.c4"

And the man isn't kidding..
There is not a single move mentioned after 4...Nf6.
Nothing at all.

Roman says you "definitely should know how to play it " and that he will "definitely cover it" in another ('upcoming') DVD.

The reason he's not covering this classic opening?
Apparently, the Panov-Botvinnik is "not really Caro-Kann defense" since other openings can transpose into it.  So he doesn't think he needs to mention anything else.

WOW.   Shocked

A Caro-Kann repertoire DVD that does not cover the Panov AT ALL.  It takes my breath away.
My dog could teach you this much about how to play against the Panov; and for free.

Well, you may ask, O ever hopeful reader, what about the 4.Bd3 exchange line that they recommended in their book for White?  It turns out that "the position is definitely not bad for White but Black has equality" and its "not an ambitious way to play against Caro-Kann."  We get a few minutes of playing over the moves and done.

Bottom Line:
This DVD is absolutely horrific.  This is BY FAR the worst chess DVD I've seen, and I've seen dozens.
It's not even worth watching, much less buying.
Spend the 90 minutes reading ANY decent book on the Caro-Kann and you'll be better prepared.

I just went ahead and ordered it.
I mean...its only $20, right?

Besides, even if it only helps my repertoire a little, it's probably worth it in the long run.

I'll post my "review" once the DVD arrives.

Nietzsche

ps - As for books I already have Houska, Wells, Gallagher, Keene, Karpov, Kasparov, Speelman, etc.  Heck, I even bought Schiller's book.

Ender,

Houska's book is a black repertoire. Dzinzi offers a line for white. Rather different, no? Or you mean he does not consider Housak's line?

Perhaps you could let us know which line Dzinzi suggests? Exchange again?
