Dreev also played a few good games with Bg5 in the early 90s, before switching to his trademark Nge2.

Strong grandmasters who use it regularly these days include Moiseenko, Riazantsev and Agdestein.

Ok, thanks for the tip.

Quick question - who are the heroes on the white side of the Bg5 Saimisch?

Matt Sadler

...and could the name be given the correct spelling? Ho hum. Roll Eyes

Okay, thanks for the suggestion.

I do not know whether there really are heroes of the Bg5 Sämisch.
As far as I know Bg5 is plaid mainly to avoid the c5 gambit after Be3 as it has been considered a long time as the refutation of the Be3-"variation".
In the same style, Nge2 is also a good way to avoid the c5 gambit and it may even be better than an early Bg5.

Yusupov once said that “The problem with the Dutch Defence is that later in many positions the best move would be ...f5-f7” but he is surely wrong.
