After 5.c3 Black's best move is probably 5...Na5, as recommended in Danish Dynamite and a few other places.  Black may well have equality in that line, especially after the standard response 6.Qxd4- though in my opinion 6.Bd3 might be a better try, with at least adequate compensation for the pawn.

5...dxc3 is dangerous after either 6.Nxc3 followed by Qb3, or 6.Qd5 (usually my preference in that position) Nh6 7.Bxh6 0-0 8.Nxc3 (or 8.Bxg7, but not 8.Bc1?! Nb4 9.Qd1 c2).  Especially in blitz many players fall for 6...d6?? 7.Qxf7+ Kd7 8.Be6#.

5.Nxd4 should be a safe +=, giving rise to positions where White is freer but Black is solid.

Don't know... The sources I found suggested it was quite equal. Perhaps more equal than the 2 Knights?!, and easier to learn/play than Bc5.

These two lines are why it is almost never played:
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Be7 4.d4 and:
-4..exd4 and you have a philidor with the bishop committed to e7 (and 5.c3 is a very dangerous gambit)
-4..d6 5.dxe5 dxe5 6.Qxd8 Bxd8 which scores massively for white. An example by the 3.Bc4 expert Estrin. So it is a great line if you are into masochism Wink:

The Hungarian is clearly playable but has long been considered "+=" with best play (it seems to be a paradigm case of a += opening, one might say).  It might be the only opening that I can't recall ever seeing as the subject of a book.

hi,

I was looking for some games in the Hungarian defence on chesspublishing. I only found 2, rather old and irrelevant ones.
Is there an actual book in which this opening is treated (from black's perspective)?

kind regards

That might be becuase this opening is rather old and irrelevant  Wink
