New video on Everyman Chess website:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IE_Ete0wJ9g

Byron Jacobs discussing a few details of the book. At 4 minutes 45 seconds, he says that the book shall be available in June 2012 in the UK and Europe. When in June exactly I am unsure, but at least there are only 16 more days remaining in June. Cheesy

Smiley Yes obviously, but the very extensive preview was informative. But it is making me want to have the book even more now.

Based on the preview then and now however, the chapter on 6...Qa5 has some quite extensive analyses. More than 20 pages of this line is probably alone I would buy this book. At least one can still see index of variations.

Why did that happen? I seemed to see the preview option about 12 hours ago and now it has constricted.

I swear I have no part in this!

I have an account, but I meant that some pages are not loading, for example, p 292 or p 296 in the Amazon "Look Inside" feature.

I play the Winawer usually when I play French, but I would play Classical too because I seriously do not enjoy playing the Poisoned Pawn Winawer, because if I play the French I rather not endure such complications remnisicent of the Najdorf 6. Bg5, which is my main defence.

Thanks for the Amazon link, but how does it work that it shows so many pages of the book? "Surprise Me" button seems to show more pages each time. I am not familiar with Amazon too much though.

In my experience, French players tend to be loyal to either the Winawer or the Classical. I prefer the Classical French personally. But all that is changing as players of all levels are becoming more and more, chess universalists.  Whether this is actually a good thing is another matter entirely.

I don't but think I might well if I was often facing actively prepared opponents. The case for using the massive variety that the French offers becomes very strong then.

Especially since basically nothing vs 3 Nc3 is totally watertight in the way that some of the other stuff is.

In fact there's so much flexibility that, while all these repitoire books do offer a very good basis, it'd be something of a shame to follow all their suggestions.

Do French players generally play both the Winawer and Classical? I noticed that many French repertoire books, including this book, include both lines. Of course I would not complain about the inclusion of both lines though, it is very helpful.

I only play the Winawer. I think many books advocate both Winawer and Classical is because of Watson setting the standard on French Defense books!

I was hoping for a 7...0-0 as the Winawer line, but according to the excerpt there is quite a substantial chapter on 6...Qa5, so I am very much anticipating studying that line, and of course new ideas in the Steinitz and MacCutcheon. I would not be surprised if the French gains in popularity immensely after all of the repertoire books this year on this opening.

I generally approve of the use of "Informator symbols" as long as they supplement, rather than replacing, the use of verbal explanations.
I don't own any previous "Play the French" book but I may well end up buying this one.  The extract looks very promising and I could probably do with learning more specifics about the Winawer and McCutcheon lines as I face them increasingly often these days, and often feel that my opponents know them better than me.
