I do not know, but surnames in Ireland I usually see Mc-, such as McGregor, McDermott, McDonald, McKay, McConnell, McMahon, McGuinness, etc. whilst I see Mac- usually in Scotland such as MacEwan, MacLeod, etc. But this is another topic. Smiley

"Uncommon Early Moves", the last chapter, starts on p. 413 and the Index of Variations of Variations on p. 429, so it seems as if most coverage is on main lines, which si good.

In the excerpt, on p. 8 last sentence first paragraph, what does it mean new line in the 4. e5 variation?

Why would it be changed? Mac and Mc are not equivalent. I am not very knowledgeable about this, but I thought Mac- was Scottish whilst Mc was usually Irish and sometimes Scottish. And what if the variation were named after a player whose name was spelled MacCutcheon?

For example, if I am remember correctly, Paul McCartney is of Irish descent, and he has the Mc- ending.

The quote below is from wikipedia

"A third choice for Black is to counterattack is the McCutcheon Variation, in this variation the second player ignores White threat to push the e-pawn with 4...Bb4, the main line continues: 5 e5 h6 6 Bd2 Bxc3 7 bxc3 Ne4 8 Qg4. At this point Black may play 8...g6, which weakens the kingside dark squares but keeps the option of castling queenside, or 8...Kf8. The McCutcheon Variation is named for John Lindsay McCutcheon of Philadelphia (1857–1905), who brought the variation to public attention when he used it to defeat World Champion Steinitz in a simultaneous exhibition in Manhattan in 1885.[1][2][3]"

So probably an american Irishman?

Yes! And the Portisch-Hook. Great  Cheesy

This is the only variation I play as Black in the Winawer, so I was hoping this was covered too. Smiley If you look at the Contents page, the Portisch-Hook Variation starts at p. 287, and the next chapter, Exchange Variation starts at p. 311. So that is approximately 25 pages on 6...Qa5?

I suggest that Play the French 5th edition changes the spelling to McCutcheon.

Why?

I get the impression that MacCutcheon is the most common spelling. Any Scots here who can explain if there's a difference between MacC & McC?

I e-mailed Everyman, and the main part of the response:

Dear Mr [name withheld],

It will go to print next week and we should have copies end of June in Europe and will publish 6 weeks later in the US.

Best regards,

[name withheld]

I do not know how the excerpts and printer timing function, but I suppose when the book goes to the printer, perhaps an excerpt will follow?

I have the 3rd Edition book in front of me currently, and I am wondering what sections will be expanded. The book seems to be about 2 cm or so thick, so I wonder if new paper will be used and how thick it will be after.

http://www.everymanchess.com/chess/books/Play_the_French%2C_4th_edition still says "June 2012", so I suppose it should be published in June.

That is fine, if that is the policy then you should adhere to it. But would you know when an excerpt of the book would be given?

No, but I might be able to give a bit more information soon.

Interesting, because for the last month I have been wondering what lines the book will cover Smiley

I hope either 6...Qa5 and/or 7...0-0 will be given for Winawer.
