You are right. Perhaps 50.Kxh5 Bb5 is possible again, putting the bishop on d3 and leaving the king on f7.

NEWS: Topalov wins by using Markovich' idea! No telepathy involved, Anand should not have allowed it.

How does White make progress after say 50.Kxh5 Kg8+ 51.Kh6 Bc6 52.g4 Ba4 53.g5 Be8 54.b3 Bc6 55.g6 hxg6 56.Kxg6 Kf8 57.Kf6 Bd7 ? I can see Black making progress towards a draw though: K on d7, B just playing on diagonal h1-c6.

According to Monokroussos the game is drawn after 50.Be5 h4 51.Kxh4 and now Bb5 and Bd3.

On move 55 before playing g6, he could try to put the bishop on g7 thus controlling f8, then playing g6 with the idea to get the king on f6.
I don't know if that variation was possible though, but preparing it with Be5, when the king was on h6 looked interesting...

That was an idea, now I think it's a draw.

On chessdom.com, Alexandra Kosteniuk points out that 50 Kxh5 can be answered by 50...e5 and White can't take on e5 because of Ke6+

I had seen that one too - bit of a cheapo - but was a bit worried if after 50.Kxh5 e5 51.Bc5 that pawn on e5 could become a target.

I first thought this was an easy draw, but now I'm not so sure.

I don't understand Topalov's reluctance to play 50.Kxh5, with the plan Kh6 and with Black's king on g8 and his bishop somewhere on the e8-a4 diagonal other than e8, to play g5-g6 and eventually attack the e-pawn from f6.  Am I talking throgh my hat?

If I was Anand I would have lost this ending about 10 times! At moments like this it feels like my technique really sucks  Huh

Finally I'm a little surprised that Anand didn't play on.  Is White's win so obvious?

Watching Game 8 now, and it looks like Anand will draw this endgame, albeit with a little difficulty. The d6-knight looks nice but it's hard to find a way for White to increase the pressure.

I can't imagine that Team Anand will have missed that game so it looks that Topalov won the opening battle in game 7. If Topalov is going to score it going to be in the opening because Anand is playing better chess.
Interesting match so far.

Time that Anand spent at the opening means that Anand team did not analyze Bd7?
Topalov did not find all best moves as I understand but if Anand knew that this variation were bad for white he should not take the exchange, is not that?

No I do think that Team Anand has analysed Bd7 given that it has been played in a game with 2 super-GMs. I mean that Team Topalov succeeded in getting a position on the board that suited their player better.

You can say that Anand kept the balance and that he had winning chances at the end due to Topalov overreaching. But that doesn't change the fact that for the first time this match he could get to grips with Anand's Catalan.

I hope Topa will try 1.e4  or at least something like 6.Sh4 in the Slav instead of trying to crack the "Slav Wall"

An exchange sac by Topalov as black in the opening. I don't know any Catalan theory really so I just guess that it has been played before.

apparently it was played before in a game this year from Gelfand-Ivanchuk.
