In the current position with 32.Kf3, it looks completely equal, but with more room for error by Topalov. Black will be much better in the event of a light-squared bishop vs. knight endgame although that's too optimistic for Black to realistically hope for.

It seems a bit surprising that with two rooks and a passed pawn versus the queen, and the two bishops into the bargain, Anand didn't win Game 9.  Somebody has posted endgame analysis, in that part of the board, claiming that he should have won.

Today's game looks worse for Topalov after move 24.  It'll be sensational if Anand wins as Black.  I am far from confident of Topalov's chances in the match, given these recent developments.

According to Monokroussos both players made a few more bad moves than only 40.Rh8+, so maybe the draw still is a fair result. Still I cannot help longing back a bit to the good old days adnournment.

Tragedy. Anand had reached a winning position after a magnificent game, and then spoiled it and let Topalov slip away with a draw Cry Cry

As far as I can say, a great game by Anand, who then made a semi-blunder with 40.Rh8+? letting the black king to escape from the back rank.

In Game 9, Anand has played 18.Nh3. Now 18...e5 looks balanced on a quick glance.

I think 11.Ne5 is a more critical try than 11.Re1, and indeed Anand didn't obtain anything out of the opening although he's up a bit on the clock.

That sounds right, since the 2 pawns are close together, although the fact Anand said afterwards that he couldnt see a drawing line suggests there may be more to this than meets the eye.

Monokroussos: "the bishop reaches the perfect defensive diagonal b1-h7, the king goes to d7, and Anand can breathe a sigh of relief."
His analysis: "54...Ke8 55.Kh6 Bd3 56.g4 Kd7 57.f4 Bc2 58.Kg5 (58.f5 exf5 59.g5 is no big deal because of 59...f4 ) 58...Bd3 59.f5 exf5 60.gxf5 h6+! is strong here, and holds. 61.Kf6 Bc2 62.Bf4 Bd3 63.Ke5 h5 64.Bg3 (64.Kf6 h4 65.Kg5 h3 66.f6 Ke6!= ) 64...Bc2 65.f6 Bg6= "

It was good that Topalov managed to win vs this line, which seems to be designed to draw, just like the Berlin wall in Kasparov-Kramnik. (Yes, I know, Kramnik discovered the strength of this slav line.)

I wonder if Anand will repeat the line or try something different in his next game as black.

"keep the draw" - can Anand really hold that endgame? Further analysis required I suspect.

I think the reason for Anand's blunder was psychological in chess terms.

I mean for us at home with computers with hindsight, it's easy to see that the bishop must go to the b1-h7 diagonal to keep the draw.

However that was not the main option for Anand during the game in many lines, because the bishop had to defend the square d7. And if the white bishop is on c5 or b6, the black bishop cannot leave the diagonal due to d7, even if the black king is on f7!.
Maybe his attention was fixed on that diagonal, so he couldn't make easy the necessary switch in a timely manner.

So, did Anand have to cede g5 with ...Kf7?  It looked like Topalov was threatening to run over to the queenside, but was Black's retreat so urgent?

I think Black's plan should be to move the king to d7 and put the bishop on the b1-h7 diagonal. White is threatening to play Bd4, Ke5 and Bc5 or Bb6 which will prevent Black from getting his king to d7, so it's better if the king goes to f7 immediately. But I still don't see a winning line for White, so it's probably not essential.
The losing move is really 54...Bc6, since the bishop now can't defend the h7 pawn.

Anyway I am happy with this outcome.  I like both these players, but I especially like Topalov.

How does White make progress after say 50.Kxh5 Kg8+ 51.Kh6 Bc6 52.g4 Ba4 53.g5 Be8 54.b3 Bc6 55.g6 hxg6 56.Kxg6 Kf8 57.Kf6 Bd7 ? I can see Black making progress towards a draw though: K on d7, B just playing on diagonal h1-c6.

According to Monokroussos the game is drawn after 50.Be5 h4 51.Kxh4 and now Bb5 and Bd3.

White puts his bishop in g7 before he plays g6.  Edit: I now see someone else mentioned that.
