I don't really understand why Anand chose the Grunfeld. Was he hoping that Topalov would overreach?

Grünfeld is an established opening, so I don't think that was the problem. However, in that variation, it seems that white has a dangerous attack.

Well, I think the opening was not the problem for Anand; since it looked very sound.

Topalov played risky for initiative, since he sacrificed a pawn, and practically he got good attacking chances.  I will not be surprised, if they may find that black is better in that variation....

The last attack by Topalov was simply good.

We didn't see Anand's best today.  Maybe the travel? But they should have anticipated this variation if they were going to try the Gruenfeld because Toppy's played it before.  16..Qd6 seemed a bit loose, I prefer Carlsen's ..Bb7 and ..Rc8, but Rybka thought that everything was still OK until ..Kf7.  I applaud Toppy's attacking ability even if I find him impossible to root for because of all the off-the-board machinations.

Well, it appears that Topalov is off to a good start, winning game 1.

I voted for a very narrow win by Topalov. Thinking that he might be more eager and determined for a win than Anand. In addition he's enjoying the home area advantage etc. And being known and under suspicion for more making effective use of outside help... (Yes, I know this is not proven, but some colleagues of him seem quite convinced about this.)

Here is another opinion by GM Spraggett that sees Topalov as clear favorite: See http://kevinspraggett.blogspot.com
"If he can avoid unpleasant theoretical surprises from Anand's team, I predict that the Bulgarian will win 4 to 1, with the rest being draws." saying in his blog somewhere back in April 2010. (Way before the difficulties of Anand travelling at Sofia became an issue.)

Agreed about Barca.  But Inter helped.  We'll see if the extra rest day will help Anand.  Then again, we may never know.  If Topalov were to win game one, what would that really show us?

Sounds fair enough to me, he's lucky to get the extra days rest - Barcelona had to go on a 700 mile coach trip to play Inter, not even a chance of a postponement.

And we all saw the results of that 700 mile coach trip, Barca were utter sh!te. Cry

Since when did soccer set the standards for chess matches? The question is whether the ash delays or the travelling conditions will prevent Anand to play at his best.

It is not a question if it is perfect but more a question of it being acceptable. Anand seems to be satisfied so... .

How much we fans would like to see a K-K-like marathon, sponsors don't seem to be interested anymore.

Say what you will about the Bulgarians, but they at least put out the money. No other bid came even close.

One day may be fair, but some of the FIDE officials haven't arrived yet.  Maybe they were part of the Anand conspiracy?

If the refs couldn't have made it to the Inter-Barca game, I think they would have postponed the match.

Apparently Anand arrived in Sofia recently, after a 40-hour trip.

It seems very unlikely that Anand's request for a 3-day postponement will be granted.
