But isn't that more of a theoretical than a practical problem below GM-level? I can't imagine the average club player trying to uphold black's case here, playing for a draw with no active chances whatsoever. Just seems like such a joyless task for black.

I love it when that happens to the top guys, somehow makes me feel better. Kramnik walking into the forced loss as White against Leko in the Marshall was another great one for all of us. Keep it up lads.

In the first game, both players played very quickly until 23.Rf3, so that very probably this was still home preparation - also Anand's.

Then Anand seems to have forgotten the order of moves - 23.-Bd7! 24.Rg3 Kf7 may have been what was on his computer (see commentary by Malcolm Pein). The knight sacrifice on f6 does not work in this case. 

In a German newspaper Anand was cited saying that he mixed up the moves.

Well, in the first game, I don't know how much it was preparation. Maybe he had Nxf6 in a similar position on his computer. Still, he must calculate at the board all the relevant defences....

Probably starting with Qa3 he was out of the home preparation*, however trading queens in that position was a bit outlandish; Anand showed a very fine technique, but Topalov played like an average GM.

Anybody know who Anand's seconds are? Usually one gets a photo of them lurking in the background on Chessbase, but seen nothing. Another forum somewhere suggested Peter Heine Neilson and Rustam K...??
My not-up-to-date database can't find Anand playing the Catalan as white in a serious game since the early 90's - is this beautiful game all his own work?

An impressive victory by Annand today.
In this match I am an Annand supporter. In the Kramnik-Topalov match I rooted for Topalov. I think that Anand is a more all round player. But to think that Topalov just plays for tactical swindles is over simplistic. I have seen several good strategic games and excellent endgames by T as well.
And well I wouldnt take Kramnik's judgement on Topalov to seriously (we now that there is bad blood there).

That reminds me of Kramnik's words (in a video interview) to the effect that he thinks Anand is a better player than Topalov.

Just to cite what someone wrote about the first game in the chatroom of a chess forum: Looks like some Rybka bullshit. That was my feeling.

In the second game Anand outplayed Topalov in a lightly worse position very convincing.

So it seems to be clear: Anand plays chess - Topalov tries tactical swindles (as always and on a level I'd like to be able to).

I beg the pardon of everyone who is offended by this words. I know who's a real master. And maybe it's wrong to express feelings about something I can't really judge.

Anand won a beautifully conceived strategic game today to level the score. 

This is shaping up as a battle between computeresque skill and deep strategic thinking.  That would give me yet another reason to root for Anand! 

I know, both players excel at strategy and tactics, but the most interesting WC matches have featured stylistic duels.  This is looking like a classic battle!

Well yes but its not something he's played much before. Not a bad idea in principle of course but Topalov was going to have some decent preperation around from his match vs Kamsky so the surprise value wasn't likey to be so strong.

Presumably he has some good new ideas lurking. Still it doesn't seem to compare so brilliantly to that semi slav idea he hit Kramnik with.
