A book on The Tromp would be suitable then.
THE book on that has still not yet been written....

Many congrats on finishing!
Treat yourself to the Hawaiian tourney in March 2015, which looks to be a cracker.

Much easier to write, much shorter, and much more depressing for Black

Grin

A long break will be nice. Perhaps I can get better at this game, and learn how to play with the White pieces!

Congrats! Kalashnikov is nice! Now you start your next projevt which is a book on the Löfwentahl. Probably easier to write. Smiley But you might have a break I guess!

Congrats, Tony!

Hopefully you double checked your lines with SF5?  Wink

I started to play CC chess relatively recently but I have noticed that getting "proper" results requires incredible cpu time (and not with infinite analysis).

Since SF5 is really recent I am not sure that double-checking a book with SF5 will add any value to the work certainly done while writing the book  Smiley

It's way too late. If there's anything I've learned while writing the book and reading so many others, it's that no opening book will ever hold up completely. People always find new ideas and disagree on assessments. The reality is simply that for a book of this size (my manuscript was 417 pages when I turned it), you can't spend days analyzing every little line and detail. There's just simply too much there.

I think people will like the book a lot. I know that at my level, very people know what the hell they're doing vs. the Kalashnikov, and I always get fully playable positions out of the opening with little effort.

I'd say about 90% of my games after 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 continue 3.Bb5 Nf6 or 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 e5 5.Nb5 d6 6.N1c3 a6 7.Na3 Be7!? 8.Nd5 Nf6!, both of which I feel very comfortable in.

I always found Houdini to understand the Kalashnikov positions the best, but I haven't been using SF5 for too long now!

A reasonable comparison might be Fighting the Anti-Sicilians. I'd say some of the sharper and more intricate chapters contain more analysis that pushes further, and some of the chapters that are less likely to show up in tournament players' games or are less challenging might be slightly wordier and less dense.

For instance, the main lines of 6.c4 Be7 7.N1c3 and 6.N1c3 a6 7.Na3 Be7!? 8.Nc4! are fairly dense and deep - in the latter, the final branch is at move 16! To contrast, White's rare alternatives on move two, like 2.a3 or 2.Ne2!? are covered in substantially less depth, and tend to be more wordy (I give more general guidance) as a result.

Hi Tony,

Thanks for responding.

I'm looking forward to it although i find Palliser's work varies quite a bit in the amount of explanation he provides (some books having more than others).

Hi RoleyPoley, sorry for the late reply. Not sure on the exact release date yet, that will depending on Everyman's editing schedule and my work schedule. Will keep this thread up to date with the progress there.

With regards to size and level of explanations, I probably fall somewhere in between a Vigorito and a Lakdawala, maybe closer to Vigorito. A book by Palliser might be closest. The book is somewhere closer to 400 pages in MS Word, maybe more, and there is a lot of analysis. But there's a very reasonable amount of strategic guidance and commentary as well. The book opens with ~15 pages covering a brief history of the Kalashnikov, a discussion of how the chapters fit into a tight repertoire, and a discussion about the typical pawn structures and their corresponding plans, as well as some of the tactical ideas that show up time and again. All of this is discussed over and over in the chapters, and each chapter itself ends with 4-8 "key points" that I thought the reader should take note of. Most of these are high-level strategic tips, reminders about tactical motifs specific to certain lines, or my thoughts on which lines should specifically be memorized.

There is no real discussion of endgame themes - for me, it would be a bit out of place.

I hope everyone likes it.  Grin

Whats the latest news on this?

Is this still going to be released in July?

and with regards to the content, does anyone know how much explanation is there going to be?  (is it likely to be quite wordy, or is it largely analysis with some written explanation included?)

Will there be separate coverage of the middle and endgame themes?

I appreciate your trust! I have been busy in the past and unable to dedicate huge chunks of time to it for various reasons, but lately I am dedicating all of my spare time to sealing it up and shipping it out. I am in a groove, and I promise you guys that I'm trying to get it out as fast as humanly possible, for the sake of everyone involved.
