Very possible that no one knows, at least no one outside of the printer/Everyman. The first communication I saw was that it was arriving in the UK warehouse two weeks ago on 11/20 or so. Then an e-mail five days later said "The Killer Sicilian has had a slight delay at the printer so will [be] another couple of weeks."

Two weeks from 11/25 is 12/8, so maybe 12/10 or a bit after is a reasonable guesstimate?

That is quite a big gap. What happened? But still yet, De Beste Zet show 10.12.14, so perhaps no one really knows the exact date?

The Schach Niggemann site lately changed the old announced date for appearance of the book (November 27) to January 10, 2015.

I play 7...b5 for variety as well. I put a ton of hours into 7...b5 8.Nd5 Nge7 9.c4! Nxd5 10.exd5! Nd4 11.cxb5 g6!?/?!, trying to make it work as a surprise weapon and secondary option for the book, but it never quite panned out. I found an improvement or two over Shirov-Sitnikov, but even then I was never confident in the more critical 16.bxa6!?N.

That sounds good, but I think I will also take a look into 6.N1c3 a6 7.Na3 b5, if just for the sake of variety.

There are two recommendations in all the lines with 6.c4, against 7.N1c3, 7.b3, and 7.Be2 I cover the more "classical" and closed tries as well as the lines with an early ...f5. Against 7.Bd3 I cover 7...a6 and 8...Bg5 as well as the older lines with ...Nf6 and ...Nd7. I only cover 7...Be7 against 6.N1c3 but provide a short overview of the main lines with 7...b5. To cover both would basically prohibit me from covering the Anti-Sicilians due to space. It's just too much. For those lines I'd refer you to C&L's book, but it's a tough read. Very little in the way of insightful commentary, and terrible typesetting.

Even in the lines with one recommendation I frequently give extra and interesting options in  the notes. It was important for me to try and ensure that the books holds up a long time.

How long? Also are there in general 2 or more recommendations for each of the major lines? It is good when this happens in repertoire books as it gives more options.

Hi PatzerNoster - thank you, thank you. Yes, stamina is exactly the right word. 464 pages over 4 years doesn't sound that bad, but it was a ton of work, thousands of hours, and many late nights up analyzing, writing, and playing training games and such. Hopefully it was worth it and the readers like the book!

I do think Black has reasonable winning chances in the 6.N1c3 main line with 10.g3. All things considered, by move 16 the players have only traded off two minors pieces, and play is quite imbalanced. The positions are definitely more clarified and straightforward than things like the Yugoslav Attack or the Bg5 Najdorf, but they're not totally dry. From memory, Almasi has lost more than once in this variation as White, once to Ivanchuk and once to Moiseenko, who has a really, really good score from this position as Black. Federov has some nice wins, Ikonnikov surely has a few, and I know Jan Markos has a couple as well. And these aren't just 2200 players, they are 2500-2700 players winning as Black. It's still chess, and the opening can only take you so far.

Like you said, the variation is playable for Black, and it all comes down to your philosophy - if you really think you need to play ultra sharply as Black in order to win, you might want to investigate the older 7...b5, or even something like 10.g3 h5, which I only mention in passing. I could have covered them, but I was less sure about these as equalizing tries (and that was my first priority), and I didn't want chapter 1 to balloon up to 75 pages or something. Perhaps if there's interest I can do a PGN update with my thoughts on these lines.

If you decide to buy the book (I hope you do!), let me know what you think, and happy hunting!

You're capable of finding these games yourself, but here are some black wins at the top level after 10.g3:

It's likely that your games in this variation won't be short, which can be viewed as good or bad depending on how you look at it!

Dear Tony,

congratulations on finishing the book!
I can only guess how much stamina is needed to really finish such a long-lasting project!

From what I have heard it seems a fine book, I am thinking about buying it and adding the Kalashnikov to my repertoire as a surprise weapon (usually play the Dragon).
Is it possible to play the Kalashnikov occasionally without having to put in too much work to stay up to date?

My question is: do you think Black has chances to play for a win in the main variation 6.N1c3 a6 7.Na3 Be7 8.Nc4 b5 9.Ne3 Nf6 10.g3 at 2200+ ELO level?
The main main variation seems to be playable for black, although devoid of realistic winning chances (or am I wrong?).
It would be ok for me to play something slightly dubious if it yielded more winning chances, does such an option exist and if yes, do you treat it in the book?

I am 2300+ ELO, but as Black it seems increasingly difficult to beat (slightly) weaker, but well perpared opponents, hence my question.

December according to chess and bridge. Pre Xmas at least, although I'm not quite sure how much that matters for chess books Smiley

I guess it depends where in Europe you are and how fast your shops get the book. My understanding is that late last week the book arrived at the Everyman warehouse, but I'm not super sure how quickly they're going to get them out, etc. I hope it's this week! Everyman estimated November release in Europe, and November is quickly wrapping up!

I hope titled players will get a lot out of the book - the intro is probably too basic for players that strong, but the analysis is fairly deep. Shabalov liked it enough to write a forward for it, and he very rarely puts pen to paper.

Hej Tony, congratulations on your book, do you think that Europe get the book this week? I plan to order it, it looks good for titled players based on what I see on Amazon.uk preview.

Thank you so much - would love to hear everyone's thoughts about the book - good or bad - once readers can get their hands on it.
