Thx for the response.

Seems to me that whatever Black does in this line White gets a nagging endgame edge. OK this is enough for a top GM and perhaps Black can defend at the lower levels but I just do not like Black's position. Therefore looks like 4...Bc5 is going to the scrapheap!

Unless someone else can suggest something more encouraging for black?

2008 is correct, but Sochi should be Bilbao. There are a few other high level games:
Savchenko-Kramnik, Moscow 2007
Radjabov-Eljanov, Kemer 2007
but most of all Anand-Aronian, also Bilbao 2008.

Rublevsky-Grischuk, Elista 2007 and Radjabov-Aronian, Sochi 2008 (? not sure) are two key games off the top of my head. Both with 6...bc6, which is probably Black's best chance at equalising.

6...Qf3 7.gf3 bc6 8.Rg1 seems a bit more comfortable for White, as in Tseshkovsky-Morozevich. Black could play better, but it doesn't really alter the evaluation.

Hi All

After the moves 1,e4 e5 2,Nf3 Nc6 3,d4 exd4 4,Nxd4 Bc5 5,Nxc6 Qf6 the move 6, Qf3!? seems to be a very annoying move for Black to face. Indeed this move has been recommended in The Scotch Game by IM Barsky, Starting Out 1,e4! by GM McDonald and IM Andy Martin in his recent Foxy DVD on the Scotch. Yet this move is not covered in the excellent repertoire book Play 1,e4 e5 by GM Davies. Did he leave it out by accident or was there some other reason!

My question is can Black get decent play in this line and can anyone point me to a decent line or game between some GM's to give pointers on the way to go?

Many thanks
