Up to 1800 one can play the scandinavian, but there seems to be no antidote against shirov´s line with Qe2.

1) Black doesn't have to play 3...Qa5, there is also 3...Qd6, 3...Qd8 and 2...Nf6.

3. ..Qd6 4.Nf3 Nf6 5.d4 a6 6.g3 is a very good line for white
3. ...Qd8 - never analysed, but is there any GM, any IM, who plays it regularly?
2. ...Nf6 3.d4 Nxd5 4.c4 Nb6 5.Nf3 plus h3 has a very good score for white
2) Black can avoid 9...Qf6 10.Qe2 variation with 9...gf6 which is only a little bit better for White.

9. ...gf6 - black has nothing, except of a difficult ending - white plays for 2 results;
3) The last time I checked the analysis proving an advantage for White with 10.Qe2 was a 25+ move variation. Most players won't have seen it, and the chances of them remembering it over the board are low.

There´s another thread - of course Wink - on chesspub about this specific line, black is definitely under pressure;

just my 2cs

The older, the better - over 2200 and still rising.

Yer, this one sounds interesting.
Sounds like it's a middlegame manual on pawn structures arising.
Isn't that 'real' opening study?

There's a review out by Donaldson on jeremysilman.com, although whatever he says should be taken as a pinch of salt, as he is one of those reviewers who raves about everything.

Hello, I got his book (but in french) in my hand, it has more than 300 pages and seemed very good. Someone spoke about the light bibiography, I don't know it because in the french version there is none. But he is one of the best players of France, he has played the Scandinavian at high level and don't forget in France there is Eric Prie...(I don't know their relations but I can imagine they have shared analysis)

I am not an expert on the Scandinavian but it really looks serious. It's not really a repertoire book, even if it's about ..Qa5, he gives many alternatives for Black and White. So to respond to BabySnake, I believe both are covered but he of course explains his preferences. I run to see what he has to say to this critical variation: 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nc3 Qa5 4.d4 Nf6 5.Nf3 c6 6.Bc4 Bf5 7.Bd2 e6 8.Nd5 Qd8 9.Nxf6+ Khalifman's main line and Bauer's main line. He is himself quite pessimistic about 9..Qxf6, the best line here is known from Prie with a quick Bg4 and 0-0-0 but it's maybe not ok. So Bauer shows 9..gxf6 as his main try (and it seems he played the Black side of it). I did not buy the book even if I hesitated and I am still hesitating, because I don't think the Scandinavian is for me, and as White I don't need 300+ pages of work to play against it. But it really looks nice for a Scandinavian player!

I am very interested in this book. Can anyone enlighten me which move order Bauer recommends for black?
For example after 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nc3 Qa5 4.d4 Nf6 5.Nf3 does he use 5.-c6 or 5.-Bf5?
Also, does he include other options for black, such as 5.-Nc6 or even earlier deviations? Or perhaps this is more of a repertoire book for black, only suggesting what he thinks are black's best options?

Wahls will probably never again write a chess book. He hit the jackpot with his poker site PokerStrategy.

That may be a translation of "Modernes Skandinavisch 2" (www.chessgate.de/buch_skandinavisch2.html) by the same three authors.

It seems Wahls is doing another book: The Modern Scandinavian: Themes, Structures & Plans in an Increasingly Popular Chess Opening by Matthias Wahls, Karsten Mueller, and Hannes Langrock - New in Chess

It has been said that chess players are good at two things, Chess and Excuses.  It has also been said that Chess is where all excuses fail! In order to win you must dare to fail!

But at least he lists Wahls. Most older books ignored his ground breaking work.
