I have the Killer Dutch DVD, and my biggest complaint is that I can't watch it on my non-widescreen TV. The picture is widescreen, and it fills my screen from top to bottom, so the sides get cut off, which often includes a portion of the chess board. So I have to watch the DVD on my computer instead.

Does anyone with a non-widescreen TV know if the Killer French DVD's have the same issue?

Check your remote for a format button. It allows you to expand or contract the picture to fit the screen.

Maybe on a newer TV, but mine is too old for that sort of thing.

Good point - so ...Rh8 transposes to the line you gave above - suppose Black could continue with ...b6 after h3, or whatabout ...Qa2!? trying to come around the other way with the Queen.

@ Dom

Thank you! For some reason I only looked at the forcing 21.g4 Nd4 22.Rg3 Qh1+ 23.Bf1  Rh8 24.h3 Bb5 25.Qg2 Qxg2 26.Bxg2 Ne2 winning back some material. But this seems to be unconvincing because of 27.Rb3 Ba6 28.Bxb7! Nxc1 29.Bxa6+ Nxb3 30.Rxb3+ with a clear advantage for White.

It´s interesting that Black can take his time with playing slow moves.

@ Keano

I do not quite see how Black wins a pawn back after 22... Rh8 23.h3 Qh1+ 24.Bf1.

I will look for the game you mentioned with an earlier ...Rh8.

after 21.g4  Nd4 22.Rg3 I like 22...Rh8 better. Black will follow with ...Qh1+ winning back one pawn and with more than sufficient comp for the other.

Also a much earlier ....Rh8 is also playable for Black. Check it out theres a recent game went very well for Black.

@Fllg: my Stockfish chess engine gives:

21.g4  Nd4 22.Rg3 Qh1+ 23.Bf1 b6 and now

A) 24.h4 Rd7 25.Rh3 (25.Be3 Nf3+ 26.Ke2 Bb5+) Qe4+ =

B) 24.Bb2 Be4 25.a4 Rd5 26.Ba3 Rc8 27.Bd6+ Kb7 27.Rxc8 Kxc8+ 28.Rc3+ =

C) 24.a4 Qe4+ 25.Rge3 Qd5 26.Red3 (26.Ba3 Nf3+) Qa5 27.Ba3 Nb5 28.Qd2 Rxd3 29.Rxd3 Nxa3 30.Rxa3 Qxd2+ 31.Kxd2 Rxg4=

D) 24.h3 Rd7 25.Bb2 Rgd8 26.Rxd3 Nxc2+ 27.Kd2 (27.Qxc2 Bb5) Bb5 28.Kxc2 Qe4 29.Qd2 Ba4+ 30.Kb1 Bb5=

and 21.Kf1 Rc8
and 21.Bd2 Qa2 22.Qc5 Qa1+ 23.Kf2 Rxg2+ 24.Rxg2 Qd1 25.Be2 Qxd2 =+

For the "main line" Be3 Vitiugov, gives: 18.Be3 Nxe3 19.Qxe3 Rxg2 20.Rxg2 Qxg2 21.Be4 Qxh2 22.ooo Bc6! 23.Kb1 Bxe4 24.Qxe4 Qf2=

Williams regards the following line as the critical continuation in the "Poisened Pawn":

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.e5 Ne7 5.a3 Bxc3+ 6.bxc3 c5 7.Qg4 Qc7 8.Qxg7 Rg8 9.Qxh7 cxd4 10.Ne2 dxc3 11.f4 Nbc6 12.Qd3 d4 13.Nxd4 Nxd4 14.Qxd4 Bd7 15.Rg1 Nf5 16.Qf2 Qc6 17.Bd3 Qd5 leading to this position:

* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
*

Now apart from his mainline 18.Be3 he mentions 18.Rb1 Bc6 19.Rb3 0-0-0 20.Rxc3 Kb8 and stops here saying Black has enough play for 2 pawns. Obviously my playing skills are not as good as Williams´ so I´m asking for advice here. After the further 21.g4 Nd4 22.Rg3 (Rybka´s first choice I confess) does Black really have enough?

Hi everyone, sorry about the late reply Gueler. I have not visited this site for 2 weeks hence the late reply.
On the subject of the free ebook, I am hoping that it will be ready before the new year. Everyone who has purchased a copy of the DVD will get a copy as soon as it is finished.
I will try to answer any other questions concerning, 'The French Defence' but I am now off for another 2 weeks as I am coaching at the World Junior Championships!  Smiley

Simon,

No problem at all.  Smiley Thanks for replying.

I can only echo what the majority is saying: great DVD!!

There are so many positive aspects of your DVDs people have commented about that there isn't much new I can add.

Apart from the superior production quality, I do like how you explain the ideas and plans, espially when you reach the end of your variations.

Keep up the great work!

Simon,

On your DVD you mentioned that an ebook would be available as well. How is that coming along? I could not find it on your webite. Thx

No Reply... even  after 2 weeks... But just suggest that You need fritz to analyse his moves, like in case of chessbase products, and he (and his friends)will give you almost immediate response  Smiley

Actually, you need Deep Rybka 4.  Wink

Or just one of the free engines you can find on the net...
