I want to add that Everyman's Easy Guide to the Nge2 KI is typically a look at what the authors consider the best two or three tries by white and black in the Hungarian attack.  It's not enough for a repertoire, but it is quite enough to give you some punch to your KID lines as white or black.  It's short and concise, and obviously it does not include all tries.  Ghallagher's Repertoire book Play the King's Indian may be sound, but if it is your first foray into KID, then something else is probably more apporopriate as Ghallagher spares no room for why he prefers the Nc6 lines to the Nbd7 lines or really why he thinks there is no problem in the exchange lines.  It's a good book, but it may not suit some.

The customer reviews at amazon suggest that Bologan's KID Repertoire book is quite good.  I own Ghallagher's Play the KID, the easy guide to the Nge2 KI, and a book called Kasparov on the KID which is published by Keene.  In some ways, the Kasparov book is most interesting as far as games go, but its annotations are far from verbose.  I think there are even pages where there are no words, but it is a worthy collection of games even if you have to come up with your own reason why the play was good or bad to some extent when most annotations result in the standard type '±' evaluations.  Most people would simply trust Kasparov's evaluation, but what is obvious to K is not always obvious to the rest of us.

Gallagher and Golubev books really not that similar. Gallagher is a traditional black repitoire book with plenty of advocacy built in.

Golubev is basically a large number of the interesting games he's played in the Kings Indian + analysis on them. I'm sure you could build a repitoire using it but thats not quite its main purpose.

Its certainly much more balanced than Gallagher Smiley ie no attempt to prove the exchange loses for white and plenty of games where maybe in trouble but wriggling out due to active pieces/ingenious play mind!
(and the odd one where he's just crushed.).

With both being relatively old now, I'd think Golubev maybe more useful. Certainly the content should age better.
(in fact - not being a KID die hard! - I rather preferred the more honest approach in the first place Wink)

@urusov Great link! As always.

lAnd don't forget ChessPublishing eBooks on King's Indian. At least the Four Pawns Attack is updated 2010. There also are playable eBooks on Classical KID, Fianchetto and Sämisch but they are a bit older (updated 2004, 2005).

What kind of proof is that?

I think Gallagher's Play the King's Indian is a very solid repertoire to start with.  There are so many good books, though, it is hard to recommend.  My own experience is that you should pick a KID player (such as Kasparov, Gufeld, Bologan, Golubev) to follow and look at his games and his repertoire.  There are a number of books out there where a player essentially uses his games as a model repertoire.  That sometimes is an easier way to get started than wading through a theory book, though I think Gallagher's stuff is first rate.

I have posted a webliography related to the Mar del Plata that might be helpful:

Ghallagher's Play the King's Indian and Starting Out: The King's Indian usually get favorable reviews.  Also getting good reviews is  Gyozo Forintos & Ervin Haag's Easy Guide to Nge2 King's Indian.  I tend to read reviews by John Watson because he can be quite brutal.

I second that suggestion.  Bellin and Ponzetto's book was the one that created the fashion for whole books full of  verbal explanation of the themes in a single opening, with lots of diagrams and arrows, etc.  That's not an accident: the explanations are superb. It's a little old, though, and not intended to give a reply to every challenging move, so I would definitely supplement the theory with a repertoire book emphasizing variations.

Try getting a copy of Mastering The King's Indian Defense with the Read and Play Method by Bellin & Ponzetto.

I agree with Lou_Cyber, Gallagher's SO book is definitely the best starting point.

'King's Indian Battle Plans' by Martin is quite good for picking up the ideas, plans and motifs in the opening with well selected albeit sparsely annotated games. Bologan's KID repertoire book is the most recent and probably the best available at the moment, but I'd recommend you buy Golubev's 'Understanding the King's Indian' and Gallagher's 'Play the King's Indian' if you are serious about playing the KID as a long-term defence to 1.d4.

Against the Classical, what do you intend against 7.0-0? 7...Nc6, 7...Na6, 7...Nbd7 or 7...ed4?

Gallaghers "Starting Out" book spring to my mind, as it´s in stock and gives a good overview on the topic.

Subscribing to the KID section would give access to the pdf book on the KID, as well as access to all commented games. The price for one section is just as much as you would have to pay for a book, and it could be the best way to get used on the topic.

Imho the problem of most KID books ist that they tend to be repertoire books - e.g. the KID books by Gallagher and Golubev, which are excellent, but you are limited to the variations chosen by the authors. Vigoritos book will be a repertoire book too, if I understand the link given above, though I am convinced that it will be very good too.

It might be better to obtain a basic knowledge on variations first, and buy afterwards those repertoire books whith the lines you want to play.

If you try, you may lose. If you don´t try, you have lost.

Can you wait? David Vigorito (who manages this section for Chesspub) is writing a two volume series for Black: http://www.everymanchess.com/chess/books/Attacking_Chess:_The_King's_Indian,_Vol...

Hi friends! I decided to change my trusty Slav and Tartakower for the turbulent waters of the King's Indian... but I have never played it and I do not really understand well the positions. Could you tell me what book to buy first and once inside the King's indian what variation to study to begin the journey. Thanks a lot
