Sorry to bump such an old thread, but I was wondering what resources are available/ideal for study of this variation? Obviously all the French repertoire books for Black that recommend 3.Nd2 Nf6 cover this but is there anything either for White or from a general perspective? If not would Watson's 'Play the French 4' be the best reference?

Baskaran Adhiban did a rather pro-White Yearbook article on it last year.

One source of information about "the big clamp" variation (where white to build a big pawn center) is Dvoretsky and Jussupow book "Opening Preparation" where Kosikov explains how was build the system 7.Ndf3 Qb6 8.g3 cxd4 9.cxd4 Bb4+ 10.Kf2 g5!?

To forbid the counterstrike g5, the prophylaxis move h4 can be played but Black has ressources too: 8.h4 cxd4 9.cxd4 Bb4+ 10.Kf2 f6  11.Be3 (11.Kg3 Sax-Luther,Bad Zwesten 2002 (Psakhis Nd2)) oo

Look at one Psakhis's book "3.Nd2" for analysis

And finally for the 8.a3 move I recommend Informant 80 with analysis of the Shirov-Anand, Teheran 1980 game  for which Vitiugov gives one Anand's idea 13.Neg1 b6! Netzer-Picard,Mulhouse 2006 (Vitiugov)

This line used to be Mickey Adams speciality against the French when he was a young whipper-snapper. later he switched to the Bd3 stuff. You could do worse than check his early games.

After 8. g3 (which certainly used to be the main line, though I don't know if it can be called that any more), 9...Bb4+ and 10...g5 (which burst on the scene about 1985 as I recall; before that 9...Bb4+ was just regarded as a bad move) is certainly a major line, but I've seen the approach with ...Be7, ...0-0 and ...f6 (which standardly offers the e-pawn with check) regarded more highly by some sources.

Ah the main line is 8 g3 (8 Nge2 tends to come by transposition via 3 Nc3 Nf6 4 e5 Nfd7 5 Nce2 etc and is a perfectly good move too.).

Then the g5 idea is 8 g3 cd 9 cd Bb4+ 10 Kf2 g5!? that has I think been the main line for a little bit now. Here's a not utterly atypical line after 8 h4: cd 9 cd Bb4+ 10 Kf2 f6 11 Kg3!? (Be3 more normal it seems.). Endless Ndxe5 sacrifices of various degrees of soundness about with it.

This really is one line where you need to put some study in before trying in practice. Its fun but odd Smiley

8. h4 is indeed a major line which I recall as being originally played by Spassky, circa the late '80s.

8. a3 (which to my knowledge has been around for a decade or so) was rather well-regarded in Steffen Pedersen's Tarrasch book of about five years ago.  He gave 8...c4 as interesting, citing a couple of games as leading to equal or unclear positions.

h4 isn't hacky at all. Its propylaxis against g5 Smiley
(Seriously! Well also letting the rook out/grabbing kingside space.).

In general the line is about white taking a load of central/kingside space really early, and then trying to somehow keep the position stable enough to later win with it.

The place to start to understand this would be the old main lines with (iirc) 8 Nge2 and then blacks ways to try and crack stuff open - both the piece sacrifices and the g5 ideas which became the main line.

Then start looking at the ways white found to try and work round such ideas by developing even less! (8 a3/h4 Smiley). I'm not sure how easy a line it is to play for white, but you'll certainly win some games when black does 'nothing' and your space wins it for you.

I'm not sure about the theoretical status of 8 a3 c4. It could just be too slow for black, although black can normally at least try to play that way in this sort of position.

I haven't seen many threads covering 5.f4, but glad to here still thought is ok.

I'm quite interested in the line 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2 Nf6 4.e5 Nfd7 5.f4 c5 6.c3 Nc6 7.Ndf3 Qb6 8.a3
(Unfortunately the online opening-tree I use crashes at this point).
Is anyone aware whether there is any material or discussion on these lines available online?
Is 8...c4 a major try?

Plus a friend has mentioned 8.h4!?
Seems a little 'hacky' but maybe OK OTB upto 2100 level?

Well, it is traditionally a main line, and from what I've seen is still considered quite reasonable.

C05: Tarrasch 3..Nf6 with 5.f4!?

I'm looking to add the Tarrasch to my repertoire after 1.d4 e6 2.e4.
However, I feel a bit like a duck out of water here on the French forum, having never played or faced it (except through some awful transpositions!).

I'm sure the main line 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2 Nf6 4.e5 Nfd7 5.Bd3 c5 6.c3 Nc6 7.Ne2 would be the solid way to go against stronger and level opposition.

But what about 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2 Nf6 4.e5 Nfd7 5.f4 perhaps against weaker opponents?
It seems more fighting but is it slightly 'not correct'.
The line with ..g5 looks hairy, but against weaker opposition maybe that's ok.

My question is whether the line 5.f4 is reasonable or is it a bit dodgy?
Is it worth considering or best to stay clear?

Cheers,
Tickly.
