By the way, if the people want decisive games, I volunteer myself for the next Candidate's Cycle.  I can pretty much guarantee that every one of my games will be decisive!

I dunno Grischuk might offer you a draw on move 8.

I'm disappointed as well but I don't think the players are to be blamed.  If Grischuk thinks his best chance of winning are in the fat time controls, then he's just following what amounts to good match strategy for him.  The format is definitely to blame.

It reminds me of a rule that was put in place in college football (American) a year or two ago.  In order to speed the games up a little, they decided to start the game clock as soon as the ball was kicked off, not as soon as the opposing team caught the ball.  So in one game a team was up by a point or two with about 30 seconds left on the game clock.  Instead of kicking off to the opposing team, they kicked the ball out of bounds and took a 10-yard penalty.  Then they kicked the ball out of bounds again, and again, and again, until the clock expired.

Unsporting?  I don't know; is it unsporting to follow the rules to your advantage?  People often take a delay of game penalty (5-yard) on purpose, for instance, to give their kicker more of a straight shot at a field goal.  Is this much different?

The rule was quickly changed after that game.  Hopefully this Candidate's format will change as well.

Hi All

Horray the boys finally turned up and yes Grischuk did try to win as white! That's more like it! OK it was a draw but it was a fight at least.

If FIDE want to save money simply run an 8 all play all tournament double header 14 rounds and simply base the 8 players to play in the tournament based on the average rating list following the last World Championship match. The sofia rules should apply and there you have the challenger. Much better than this farce.

Hope there is a result tomorrow. I would have been rooting for Grischuk but sorry I want Gelfand to get it. Anand will of course destroy him if he does not underestimate him. Grischuk if he gets through presumably would want a 6 game match with Anand then head straight into the blitz shoot out and hey presto we could have a World Champion who has never won a classical game of chess on the way to the top of the summit!!

a double elimination bracket sounds interesting to me this way the players don't have to be so scared of losing.

Where does Carlsen state that he dislikes matches? What he dislikes is the current WC having a dorkload of advantages.

Aside from the whole short matches thing (why is it a K.O. Tourney in the first place? I don't think there's still the danger of people agreeing to quick draws between each other to save energy for people they dislike), the qualification for the candidates is a joke.
The "runner-up for the last qualifying cycle" gets a spot? The old WC Challenger I can understand decently, but third place shouldn't get anything. Kamksy won the spot for this qualifier in 2007. Gelfand got it 2009. Everyone else also sat in the 2008-2009 boat. Mamedyarov didn't even do anything (What is a wildcard entry doing in a World Championship fight?)

The whole length of the cycle should be greatly compressed. 2010 Tourneys to Qualify for the 2011 Candidates which are less of a joke and the current Champion should have to to play *some* role in them; 2012 the WC.
The Candidates should be made of people that are strong currently, not of people that were strong 4 years ago. Nakamura, Ivanchuk again etc are in great form and not allowed to compete because they weren't as good 3-4 years ago.

If FIDE wants to improve and save money on such tournaments just hold an 8 player event (14 round) winner to challenge the World Champion. Then the players would have to play for a win or would they? I know Magnus would have the guts to go for it as would Ivanchuk and players of the I am not afraid to lose school of chess should not be invited!

I don't think Magnus would agree. In his drop out declaration he wrote:

"In my opinion privileges should in general be abolished and a future World Championship model should be based on a fair fight between the best players in the World, on equal terms. This should apply also to the winner of the previous World Championship, and especially so when there are several players at approximately the same level in the world elite. (Why should one player have one out of two tickets to the final to the detriment of all remaining players in the world? Imagine that the winner of the 2010 Football World Cup would be directly qualified to the 2014 World Cup final while all the rest of the teams would have to fight for the other spot.)

One possibility for future cycles would be to stage an 8-10 player World Championship tournament similar to the 2005 and 2007 events."

To me this looks like Magnus doesn't like the idea of matches at all. "One possibility" is a tricky formulation. In fact it's the only one that he can think of given his other reasoning. That is his right but I don't see what "guts" have to do with that.

I also think it's unjust to point at Grischuk as a culprit but I don't think that he got his last two draws from worse positions. The last game was equal at the end. I rather like Black after 18...Bxg2 19.Kxg2 Kh7 20.Bxg7 Kxg7 but it may be matter of taste.

This is the Candidates for the world title - taking short draws to bank on your skill in speed chess in order to have a shot at the world title is a farce.

He knows what he's doing. Hell, he's right to do it since it's probably the only way he'd ever get to challenge for the title, but it is a mockery.

FIDE screwed up.

Also, his opponents being masters of opening preparation isn't an excuse. Kramnik (who was one of his opponents) has been off form to some degree lately, so not even trying to get him out of preparation is lame. I'm not buying the excuse.

Hi all

I was looking forward to the Candidates matches but Magnus has been proved correct. The tournament is a shambles and a PR disaster for FIDE. As for Grischuk a fantastic player but if this should happen he gets a chance at playing for the World Championship without winning a classical game? What a farce!

I hope one of them wins a game and has the guts to go for it.

I know it's easy when you sit here pontificating and all of that. I know Gary Kasparov must be fuming at the down grading of the World Championship.

What a pity.

If FIDE wants to improve and save money on such tournaments just hold an 8 player event (14 round) winner to challenge the World Champion. Then the players would have to play for a win or would they? cf no critical efforts with white: short matches with no break in between them more or less ensure that no one is going to have anything good to play as white in the later matches.....

How could they possibly when they don't even know their opponent in advance?

Think the lack of a break in between is at least as significant/detrimental as the shortness.
(Oh and Kramnik/Aronian did try perfectly hard/effectively with white vs Grischuk, it just didn't quite happen for either of them.).

As for the previous draw I couldn't find sufficient compensation for Gelfand in the end, for instance 14...Nxc5 15.Qc2 Qb6 16.Rab1 Bb7 17.Rfd1 (17.Rfc1) with the idea 18.Ne1 to trade pieces. I don't see any risk for White and he's still a pawn up.

The matches are indeed a bit short but I'm not sure that longer matches would provide more interesting chess. It depends more on the character of the players. Kramnik always finds a reason to avoid risk and Topalav usually doesn't need a reason to fight.

How exactly does Sofia rules solve anything? I mean if the players want to draw they will draw.

It's first step to changing mentality. If people start playing those "drawish" positions to the end we would see a lot of action and decisive results. Even the strongest engines with the best opening books don't draw 50% of games, let alone 90% - it's not like the game is played out.

As you've noticed, Grischuk is making a mockery of the entire format.

I don't agree with this at all. He had very difficult opponents which are masters of opening preparation and Grischuk just took a shot, especially as his Bf4 line was busted just round before by Kramnik vs Radjabov.
Vs Gelfand he is showing fight. He grinded 2 endgames to the very end and agreed to draw in 2 games when he had worse positions. Is it his fault that the opponent accepts draws in positions only they could try to play for anything ? Sophia rules would do exactly what we want here - force Gelfand to at least play out the position. It wasn't 100% clear yet and could get interesting.

That is certainly not fair or true, Kamsky showed he came to fight. He tried. Even Gelfand to some extent (until these last two short draws...) He fought long hard draws with Kamsky. Gelfand played the Najdorf twice (beautiful win against Mamedyarov...) and he could have scored a second win there too in rd4 (gave a pity draw instead).

Fine, Kamsky too. The only one I saw trying to actively level their opponents with novelties in the opening was Topalov, regardless of the sour results he achieved. The most entertaining match was Topalov-Kamsky, and it's been downhill since.

I'm not against draws. I'm against not playing the games. As you've noticed, Grischuk is making a mockery of the entire format.

completely agree. But as Grischuk himself said "should I not take advantage of the system placed in front of me?" It means FIDE messed up.

Why can't they just play rapid pairs until you have a champion (less like lotto this way).

Why couldn't they play rapid games only? Say four on a day for four days?

Well I meant Rapid only as the only tiebreaker after the classical part. Reverting to blitz makes no sense to me.
