This specific position doesn't look terribly pleasant because 1. ...Bd6 2.Kd5 and Black has to leave the diagonal and White can continue his plan

But Kd5 doesn't threaten anything, so Black can move the bishop anywhere and then back to d6 next move.

You're right, thank you. I thought that was the case but hadn't yet verified there weren't enough tempi to take advantage of the departure from the diagonal. Well, I suppose the position goes back into my hall of shame because I'm sure I could have steered the game to something like this position rather than the first (losing) position - I don't remember any of the prior positions exactly, though.

So if the bishop is on the a3-c1 or a3-f8 diagonal, is it drawn? In the first case, Black plays ...Ba3 and White can't dislodge Black. In the second case, White's idea of pushing the a-pawn doesn't work as well because the bishop protects the black pawn on a3 after bxa3. I suppose it would help to be concrete.  Say we start with the bishop on c5 rather than c3 as a worst case...

*This specific position doesn't look terribly pleasant because 1. ...Bd6 2.Kd5 and Black has to leave the diagonal and White can continue his plan. However, with the bishop starting on d6 or f8, I think 1. ...Kf6 should hold, right? With the bishop starting on d6 after 1. ...Kf6:

Looks like an easy win for White, no? 1...Bd2 2.Kb5 Kf6 3.Ka4 Ke5 4.a3 bxa3 5.Kxa3 +- (Nalimov).
2. ... Kd6 3.Ka4 Kc5 4.a3 looks better but still loses "easily". I looked at it earlier but for some reason dismissed it. I think I should look into why I dismissed it.

Quite educational. Now I don't feel so bad. So many mood swings in one day...

Hard to argue with that idea Stefan. Black never gets to blockade. White wins.

You can play Bd2-Kf6-Bc1(if allowed)-Ba3, blocking everything. Theres nothing white can do to progress from this blockade except push a4 at some point but this should be drawn as  seen from 1..Bd2 2.Kb5 Kf6 3. a4 bxa3 4. b4 a2 getting the f6-pawn when the draw is trivial.
Yeah, I played around with this a bit more and came across a lot of similar lines and came to a similar conclusion. Thanks! Now I can just put this in my hall of shame to guarantee I never miss this kind of half point again.

Opposite colored bishops endgame

I played a 10 minute game over lunch and ended up in the following opposite-colored bishops endgame. I was Black and down two pawns. I lost and think it's probably a loss, but am at a loss for "proving" it either way. I know there were probably drawing resources, being a BOC endgame.

After ...Bd2 or ...Be1, my thoughts were that White wants to get to b1 and push the a-pawn, but Black could either plan on being in a position to do bxa3 and Bb4, which causes some annoying problems, or (if Black did Bd2) sneak around to a3. So I think what is really needed is getting to king around to the kingside and the bishop onto the b1-h7 diagonal and then pushing the a-pawn. I really don't quite know where to begin rigorously analyzing this. I plan on spending a couple hours playing this ending against the computer from both sides this weekend. It's rather obvious that it's all over when White gets two passed pawns, but it's hard to get there. Any recommendations for strategies or further readings?
