I read not long ago that the average man in the Netherlands is 6 feet 1 inch.  Among Dutch GMs these days, Jan Werle is sometimes called "kleine Jan" and such; I have the impression that he is about 5 feet 10 inches, which I think is the height of the average man in the US.

2.06m would be on the tall side for NBA players, I believe.

Well, 6 foot 9 is actually more like 2.06m, which is taller than most international rugby lock forwards, so can hardly be considered anything but giant.

Still, in the NBA wouldn't 2.06 be rather short?

Are tall chessplayers required to try out for NBA teams? Robbie Random is that comment.

Are we required to play rugby but not basketball??

Are there any top chess playing jockeys? Or coxes?
Do they still do Dwarf-Chucking in French villages does anyone know by the way? Only saw it once. Soar they did. Up, up and away.

Neither Morphy nor Fischer wanted psychiatric help. - Morphy's dominant mother was concert pianist, while Fischer's dominant mother wasn't. And Morphy didn't want to play for stakes against Anderssen. At least some karmic balance. But Gambit, Fischer was born 1943, Morphy died 1884. Was there another incarnation in between you are aware of?

Regarding tall players, Klaus Junge may be considered. He had certainly GM strength. Dutch players should be ignored, since they are world leaders in this respect. The average Dutch man is about 2.00 m tall today.

Morphy was 5 feet 4 inches, as stated by Edge. He, being Morphy's personal secretary, knew exactly how tall Morphy was.

Edge was a journalist by profession, and he wasn't free of journalistic exaggerations. Morphy's challenge to the world was seen, in the language of his time, as "David vs Goliath". This motif often returns in reports, in particular when he played against the European masters. One of these reports (not by Edge) describes the ascetic Paulsen as "ox-like".

This comes from Edge again:

Quote:
Mr. Morphy's second opponent was Judge Meek. As they took their seats opposite each other, one thought of David and Goliath; [...] there was as much difference in cubic contents between the two antagonists, as between the son of Jesse and the bully of Gath, and in both cases the little one came out biggest. Judge Meek sat down with an evident conviction of the result, and [...] he assured his youthful opponent, that if he continued mating him without ever allowing him the least chance, he would put him in his pocket, [...]

Anyway, I believe that Edge made Morphy shorter than he actually was. I'll post my source on Sunday.

That part needs to be worked out. Perhaps by the next time of Morphy-Fischer's incarnation, medicine will progress far enough to cure him.

Sebastian Siebrecht. Man monster, about 6 foot 9. Good lad too.

"Siebrecht, mit 2,02 m ist er wohl der längste Schachgroßmeister der Welt" wiki. Strange that normal height (I'm 2m myself) would become 'man monster' in chess circles...

When Morphy was reincarnated as Bobby Fischer, he was quite tall. Short in one life, tall in another. Simple karmic balance.

Where's the balance in being crazy in both, then?

Of all the Grandmasters I've seen in person, Van Wely is by far the tallest.

I was going to mention him. He just looks like he's tall in pictures, but kylemeister said only 1.90m.

Isn't Peter Heine Nielsen around 6'6"?

I say Morphy was the shortest. Back in 1997, I met Anatoly Karpov and he was a bit shorter than me ( I am 5 feet, 8 inches). Napoleon would have been 5 feet 7 inches.

Morphy was 5 feet 4 inches, as stated by Edge. He, being Morphy's personal secretary, knew exactly how tall Morphy was.

When Morphy was reincarnated as Bobby Fischer, he was quite tall. Short in one life, tall in another. Simple karmic balance.

According to google both Karpov and Napoleon stood 5 feet 7 inches tall, while Morphy was only 5 feet 4 inches.

My contemporary source on Morphy says something different, but thanks for the hint. Google finds http://www.geocities.com/siliconvalley/lab/7378/morphy.htm (Bill Wall) with the following:

"Morphy stood 5 feet, 4 inches in height and was slim.  He never married.  He wore a cloak, kid gloves, a monocle (he was nearsighted at an early age), and always had a walking stick.  He was always particular about how he dressed.  He was a dandy."

Sounds like a description of an older Morphy. There is a list of sources, but no hint where the quote above comes from.

The description might be a paraphrase of his NY Times obituary http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?_r=1&res=980DE6DC143FE533A25752C1A...

Btw "and for years he thus passed his useless life away" were some harsh words for an obituary...

Okay, now I see where it comes from. F. M. Edge: The exploits and triumphs, in Europe, of Paul Morphy, the chess champion (1859):

"He frightened his adversaries, not by his strength, but by his personal appearance. This boy of twenty-one, five feet four inches in height, of slim figure, and face like a young girl in her teens, positively appalled the chess warriors of the old world—Narcissus defying the Titans."

Anybody here who trusts Frederick Milnes Edge?
