Taking a look at the highest level of play (World Championship) the Grunfeld makes a bad impression. There White scored in 51 games 21 wins and only 4 losses (67%). The KID on the other hand fared somewhat better with 10 wins and 6 losses from Whites viewpoint (only 56%) out of 32 games.

So the KID must be the better opening.  Q.E.D. Cheesy

On a more serious note thats like comparing apples with oranges. Both openings are quite different in nature and have a healthy theoretical status as far as I know.

So choose the opening which you like better, perhaps after playing through some of the games of the above mentioned matches for the crown.

Far be it from me to say that the KID is bad, or for that matter that the Gruenfeld is good. But I think that the Gruenfeld is Black's most principled reply to 1.d4.

Markovich, you've said this a few times, and I'm curious why you think the Grunfeld is so "principled."  I would think that the Queen's Gambit Accepted or possibly the Nimzo Indian are the most principled responsed to 1.d4.

I suppose you mean that after 1.d4 and 2.c4, White's main idea is to gain an advantage by taking over the center with his pawns, and the Grunfeld just allows him to do that, questioning whether he can get an advantage that way at all?

I found that the margin of error seems to be greater in the King's Indian, such that if one makes a slight error the position could transpire to += or +/_, especially in lines like the Bayonet or Mar Del Plata Variations. To me at least, it seems as if the Grünfeld avoids such pressure.

This previous reply might be a typo... I was going to say that I thought that the margin for error was smaller in the KID than the Grunfeld (in my experience.)  It seems to me that Black is playing in a flexible, counter attacking style in the Grunfeld often undermining White's center and the play is not as "one sided" as a KID with it's thematic king-side attack.  I may be speaking out of turn since neither the Grunfeld or KID are my primary defenses anymore (I used to be a Grunfeld player) but that style of play was what attracted me to the Grunfeld initially over the KID.

I'm having the same dilemma nowadays and I think i'll finally pick up the KID because is less drawing and boring than the Grünfeld. I just play for fun and don't even dream to become IM, but there are a lot of GM currently using with success the KID as their main weapon. Also, depending on your opponent, you may play both: the Grünfeld as theoretically healthy and the KID as a winning attempt. I think it was Jonathan Rowson who said they complement each other very well.

I stopped playing the King's Indian Defence and began playing the Grünfeld about two years ago, since I found it very difficult to avoid having a precariously positional disadvantage after my counterplay failed. I found the King's Indian Defence very committal and almost all endgames as += at the very least, whilst the Grünfeld was flexible enough that one did not have to succeed in a kingside attack or else lose the game by suffering for 30 moves in an endgame. Most of my games with the King's Indian Defence were me winning only by kingside attacks and losing by failing in kingside attacks and having my queenside disintegrate. Playing the King's Indian produced much pressure to have the kingside attack succeed and thus significantly increased the value and consequence of each move, an aspect the Grünfeld does not seem to acquire very often even in its sharpest variations.

I succeeded with the King's Indian until I started having to play ~FIDE 2400+, after which I lost almost all of my games by endgame/queenside disintegration. Not good when trying to obtain IM norms Smiley

I think most 1.d4 players hate Grunfeld more so that's one very compelling reason to play it Smiley

Hello friends  Cheesy

Please post as many opinions as possible which opening is better and why, regarding:

a) bullet-proof lines
b) load of theory
c) drawing lines in White sleev
