Not sure quite how realistic Polgar's seed was: having missed the recent phases of rating inflation isn't she probably still a little underrated? Not horribly of course.

As well as Grischuk, Ponomariov has done it before of course. But very random and very tough now. You'd certainly want good odds to put money on anyone.

My money is on Radjabov (I believe he is still evolving as a player and we are about to see more and more of him in the future).  Smiley

However, my fav happens to be a female ( Wink ) player..

To pick the betting question: Voting for Ponomariov here is one thing I did. Betting a minor amount would be all right too. But there's no contestant I would bet more than 10 €. Whoever will win now - it's no big surprise as 2700+ is something in chess today.

I have a feeling that people voted for who they wanted to win the tournament rather than who they would put money on if they had back their picks with something meaningful.

Judit Polgar is a great story and I love her style of chess. She did manage to beat Karjakin and Lenier-Dominguez, but most of the top seeds are still alive. She's not Serena Williams who should never have been a 28 seed, she's a strong player who is outperforming her realistic 33rd seed but can't be expected to win the whole tournament.

I chose Gashimov, who is also an outsider. Grischuk is the most obvious choice to me because he's proven especially adept at winning these mini-matches. But of course, there's still Ivanchuk, Ponomariov and Svidler who are experienced and creative players. And then there are the youngsters Navara and Radjabov who are incredibly talented. (Did I miss anyone? Lips Sealed )

It's turned out to be a more exciting tournament than I expected, in part because of Polgar, but her run will stop before the final.

A quote from Dennis Monokroussos I love:

Quote:
Soon the little-known GMs Vonahzdmisak and Vopihs will propose some radical measures to lower the excessive quantity of decisive games. Since a properly-played chess game should almost certainly be drawn, the high level of wins suggests a certain lack of competence in top-level play. Accordingly, if a game is won - especially if it is won too quickly - one suggestion is that the players replay their game with colors reversed with the previous time limit doubled.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

After 11 votes, Polgar leads with 4 (surprised me!) and I am the first to think Grischuk will win it all (another surprise!).

Since only the top3 get Candidates spots...? Does the loser of A&B play the loser of C&D for those rights?

According to the wikipedia site, yes, there will be a third place play-off. I don't know whether it will have a best-of-four match like the final though. (The graphic design suggests it does.)

Oops. I'll correct that. (In my defense, I got it right in each of the other posts. Oh well.)

I checked Chessbase (Bigbase 2010), and she has played the line 10 times, the most recent being in 2002. I usually think of her as a Taimanov player (via 2...e6), but she has also been playing 1...e5 lately.

I guess some people are more surprised than others.

That Polgar would play this variation of the Sicilian (1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Qb6) should be a surprise to just about nobody. She's used this line of the Sicilian for about two decades and was perhaps the first major player to use it repeatedly.
