Thx for the education Smyslov_fan.  Wink
Today my hero almost destroyed himself with a 14th move "novelty" in a position that was allready known in 1986 from a famous Karpov-Kasparov game.
As it was Ivanchuck put up a tough defence in a position where he was simply a pawn down.
The final drawn position white was a piece down, but Pomariov had no pawns left (B+p vs. Kn+B).

I am routing for Chucky though, he really belongs in the next candidates tournament.

   Cool

I don't want Chucky to be routed. I have a hard time rooting for him because despite his obvious brilliance he often makes absolute howlers that definitely do not belong in a candidate's match.*

In some ways he reminds me of Fernando Torres, who can score sublime goals and miss wide open nets. I like them both, and I root for them both to play only brilliantly. But it's almost as if part of their brilliance is their occasional blundering. That tendency to throw away golden opportunities may be what keeps him from advancing. It certainly cost him in the semis.

*(I don't normally point out wrong words or grammatical errors, I just found this one amusing.)

Ivanchuck has taken the lead against Pomariov in the second game, while Svidler kept things well in hand against Grischuk who decided to postpone a real fight to the two classical games remaining.

Svidler just beat Grischuk in game one of the World Cup finals.

This is fantastic news for the match because now Grischuk won't be able to use his strategy of working for short draws in regulation only to win in the rapids.

The game itself was really quite bizarre, with Svidler getting into heaps of trouble early, but winning in Grischuk's resulting time pressure.

My money is on Radjabov (I believe he is still evolving as a player and we are about to see more and more of him in the future).  Smiley

However, my fav happens to be a female ( Wink ) player..

Well, there goes my money..! Bad idea to allow Chucky to establish a Maroczy. The man knows how to play such positions!

On the other hand Judit barely managed to break a similar bind and was slightly lucky to get the perpetual (imo this time she got a rapidly deteriorating position out of the opening ).

Just read your post above. I was thinking of a particular game vs. an Acc. Dragon set-up that he has won convincingly against Anand (who also plays everything btw).

I suggest you take a look at this game again and then come back here with your trash talk.

And don't bother to tell me how 'good' you are as a player etc. Just don't bother..

These are the final 8 players in order of seeding.

(A)Polgar plays Svidler,

(B)Gashimov and Pono play

(C)Ivanchuk vs Radjabov and

(D)Grischuk-Navara.

The winners of A vs B
and C vs D play each other for the final.

Ivanchuck is  through. In the first rapid game Radjobov tried to win a theoretical drawn R vs. B endgame where Ivanchuck had his king in the safe corner. A little bit disrespectful, since even I would have held the draw against R eyes closed.
In the second game Ivanchuck seemed to outplay Radjobov stragically using his pair of bishops to full effect.

Re: inflated ratings.
I think Judith was in the top ten with a rating of about 2650 in the mid nineties. Now with a rating of nearly 2700 she is not even in the top 30.
That probably is connected with the dramatic increase of the number of rated players since 1980 or so.
Even if the average rating of all players stays the same the average rating of the top ten will increase.

Whats funny is there is potential for the semifinals to be two Russia-Ukraine matches. In which case it would also be P vs P and Chuk vs Chuk

Polgar was eliminated by Svidler today, as was Gashimov, by Ponomariov. Going to tiebreaks tomorrow are Radjabov-Ivanchuk and Navara-Grischuk. Grischuk was extremely lucky to draw today, not that I'm complaining given that I voted for him  Wink

Judit's rating declined because she gave up draws and even lost to players lower rated than herself.

Her rating may fluctuate more than most because of her family commitments, but not because of some mythical "rating inflation".

I remember T.H. White once wrote that man has discovered evolution, and then claims we've evolved. It's possible there's some minor amount of rating inflation, but it is not enough to account for a player who has been relatively inactive for a year or two to have a deflated rating. A much more likely explanation is that she's been training for this event and is playing above her expected level.

Anyway, back to the games...  Cool

This cup is getting more and more exciting everyday, I'd bet the fight for the third place is bound to be even more exciting and nerv wrecking than the fight for the First and 2nd.

Didn't she take a break of sorts for her children?
(24 FIDE rated games from July '08 to Sept 2010 as per FIDE's website, so not total but not a lot.).

The rating inflation is general and arguable of course, but if she was 2730 or so in 2005, then 2700 now certainly isn't an overstatement.

I'm not saying its anything major! She'd probably not be 'naturally' higher than ~10th-15th seed anyway.

I'd have given everyone roughly a 1/8 chance of winning from here, although thats clearly altered a little bit now Smiley

Not sure quite how realistic Polgar's seed was: having missed the recent phases of rating inflation isn't she probably still a little underrated? Not horribly of course.

....

Huh?

What "recent phases of rating inflation?

Judit Polgar has played rated chess every year. She may not be the most active player, but she does remain active. Her performance over the last two years have been just about 2700 strength. Her rating, unsurprisingly, is 2699 going into this event.
