Another reason I stopped playing the King's Indian was when I started playing 1. d4 switching from 1. e4, and the opening I felt most comfortable playing against was the King's Indian. Smiley

To me that is more of a benefit of playing the KID. It makes it much easier for me to play against it with white.

Every time I am posed grave problems in the opening, I think of going back to the Queen's Gambit Declined. The problem is checkmating your opponents is too addictive.

Don't you feel the semi slav gives you a lot of chances to play for the full point. It seems to me that is easier to understand and the big guys are playing it and it gives us a good amount of fresh theory!

What do you paly against 6.Bg5?

Gramsci, I hope more players take your enlightened view!

As a correspondence player I love the white side of the Semi-slav. As an OTB player, it's a mess.

The problem with the Semi-Slav is 6.Bg5 because the Anti-Moscow Gambit gives black a hard time just for a mere pawn, the Botvinnik are clearly better for white and the Cmbridge-Springs is not in the spirit of the Semi-Slav. Untill I find a good answer to 6.Bg5 I won't paly the Semi-Slav.

I've given up playing the KID a long time ago now. It never gave me results.
The main reason - it's one of the most popular answers to 1.d4, so most whites are very very well geared up against it!

I've changed to a similar but different opening - the Dutch Leningrad. Similar but different: lots of whites play against it as if it was a Kings Indian - but they don't appreciate the subtle differences. The Dutch is quite uncommon so most whites are seriously out of their comfort zone. It does give me the results.

Your explanation makes a lot of sense Ludde. 9.b4 does seem to forestall most of Black's ideas of mating on the kingside, but as Bryan Paulsen has stated this isn't a theoretical problem.

8...Nb8 is the other option, but this has been considered bad for Black by theory, possibly because the knight still lacks a good square in the longer term.

Sometimes, with all the theory and things, we forget the original idea behind moves.  I think (and I could be wrong, but I think) that the original idea behind having a Knight on e7 was to give Black the extra option of playing x...f7-f5 y.exf5 Nxf5 in some positions, when the Knight heads to juicy d4-square (oftened followed with ...c7-c5).  It's interesting how this rarely happens in todays games.

Everytime I play the Mar Plata or Bayonete I think to give up the KID. Then I realise that no other defence (I've tried Semi-Slav, Benko, Benoni, Leningrad, Noteboom, Nimzo) gives black the chance to play for the initiative as the KID. So I've ended up palying Ka6 KID along with the Grunfeld.

I don't understand why 7...Nc6 is Black's best move, since it seems illogical to me to spend two tempi to place Black's knight on a bad square (e7) and further White's queenside play just to get kingside play in 10 moves time. So I play everything but 7...Nc6, but then again nearly everyone disagrees with me.

Logically there must be some thruth in your analysis (e7 is a pretty bad square and it gives white d4-d5 with tempo). On the other hand one could argue that on e7 the knight is far more likely to get involved in activities on the kingside, and white is not allowed to keep his perfect centre (c4-d4-e4) but has to commit which makes blacks planning easier. I seriously doubt there is a definite "truth" available regarding if Nc6 is blacks best move, but I remember Markovich in some other thread claiming that it is a shame to play the KID and then not enter the rich and complex lines of the Mar del Plata when given the opportunity. I would not go as far as calling it shameful, but I do agree that those lines are among the most appealing aspects of the KID. White might be better, but he is under constant threat of a devastating attack.

What about the Grünfeld? Black can easily get a good game with initiative due to the high amount of dynamism in Black's position.

I agree entirely, I would place the Grunfeld in the same category as the KID in this respect, but I have unintentionally sent the thread off-topic!  Embarrassed

However, many other defences to 1.d4 don't give you the same opportunities to fight for the initiative.

I have never had many problems fighting for the initiative against 1.d4. And there are still a few lines I never tried. One day I'll look at 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.Qc2 d5 5.a3 Bxc3+ 6.Qxc3 Ne4 7.Qc2 c5 and 7...Nc6 for instance.

That's because you play the Dutch  Grin

On a serious note, the reason I singled out the King's Indian is because it's hard for White to play a line where Black gets almost no chance to take the initiative out of the opening. After 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 it's hard for Black to take the initiative in the opening unless he goes into a Modern Benoni with 3...c5. Even then it's not so easy (i.e. in the MML).
