I also agree that to make the award relevant it should be limited not only to opening works, but to active Chesspublishing members who indeed had read the books or at least write something positive about them here on these posts, because lists of facebook, online groups or unknown members who never said a word and come here only to vote is a bit unfair and there is no need to vote then.

I think that Vigorito's KID set stands out. One thing I especially like about it is its extensive consideration of ideas that lie off its recommended paths. It's very complete in that way, and also very objective. "Production values" good as well.

I agree entirely with LeeRoth, as I did last year.
There is no other prize devoted entirely to opening books. This is an openings site (despite the welcome endgame section and random discussions). The connection is natural, and more interesting than having yet another best general book prize (that opening books rarely win).

So please disregard my comments about Karpov books, grandmasters and amateurs above. I didn't really think about what I was responding to...  Tongue

Every year, we have a discussion of whether the Chess Pub book of the year should only be an opening book.

The title of the award is "Book of the Year", but the voters generally focus only on opening books. I don't see why we should limit ourselves. This is a chess publishing site.  The site does indeed focus on opening books and opening theory, but we also discuss endgames and other aspects of chess. In fact, some of the very best contributions to the forum have been in the endgame section!

Lat year, we discussed two categories, but there weren't enough nominations and some books appeared to cross over from "opening" to "general", so that idea fell through.

I think that rather than limit ourselves by rule, the voters should decide whether an opening book or another book should win. If we continue our tradition, the majority will vote for an opening book anyway.

Actually, the original idea was Boki's, who suggested that because we are an opening site, we vote for an opening book of the year.  That is what we did in 2009.  In 2010 there was a move towards becoming universal, but ultimately we stuck with opening books.  We should resist the urge to change now.

It would be nice for the award to catch on and build up some meaning in the world outside our doors.  Quality Chess picked up on it last year on its blog.   Maybe others will start to pay attention too.  But for that, you need consistency, not changing the ground rules from year to year.

We are an opening forum.  We are, as it says at the top of the page, the "Discussion forum for ChessPublishing.Com, the opening theory site."

That said, Dvoretsky's Manual, Third Edition. It has enough modifications to be borderline "new". In any case it deserves honourable mention.

I agree.  We should stick to opening books.  We're an opening forum after all.  And others do the best book awards already.

In the opening category, some nominations:

Grunfeld I and/or II by Avrukh
Experts on the Anti-Sicilians
Safest Grunfeld by Delchev
Petroff Defense by Sakaev
Najdorf by Rizzitano
Attacking Chess Kings Indian I and/or II by Vigorito
Declining the Queen's Gambit by Cox
Ruy Lopez Move by Move by McDonald
Nimzo Indian Move by Move by Emms
Beat the Guerillas by Broznik

Apologies if any of these are from 2010.

I nominate Karpov's Strategic Wins 1 - The Making of a Champion and Karpov's Strategic Wins 2 - The Prime Years by Tibor Karolyi.

Great books.

Is Bronznik's "1.d4 - Beat The Guerillas!" allowed? A translation, but somewhat updated, mostly on the Schara-Hennig gambit, I think.

I have high hopes for both Karolyi's two volumes on Karpov and the recent "Grandmaster vs Amateur" collection. But I fear I won't buy them, much less find the time to read them, before the voting.

I can think of only three 2011 books I've bought, and with virtually no time to study chess I wouldn't know if they're anywhere near "best"... Sad
