Well, "objectively" the best book should be a book by quality chess, due to their ridiculously high level in opening books, but who has the time and the memory to work through it thoroughly?
So my favorite is "The safest Grunfeld" by Delchev (chess-stars): well chosen lines and games, lots of verbal explanations, very instructive. I leart the grunfeld with the help of Rowson some years ago and this book is sufficient, to play this opening for a lifetime.

By the way, I´m always interested, where a book was printed and I´ve seen never a concept like this:
Wojo´s weapons 2:
publisher: Mongoose Press (usa)
Cover Design: Creative Center - Bulgaria
Printed in China

It seems, the usa has no media designers and no printing machines?!

The older, the better - over 2200 and still rising.

I would also agree that to make the award relevant it should be limited to opening works only.

Very simple solution, have an award for Best Opening Book, and another for Best Non-Opening Book.  End of arguments, everyone happy

Right. And let's also have an award for the best DVD, the best game commentary, the best endgame analysis, and the best attempt at self-referential chess humor. In the latter category, I nominate myself, for this post.

I am surprised at the lack of love for Sakaev's Petroff book. I nominate

Sakaev, Konstantin. The Petroff: An Expert Repetoire for Black. Chess Stars 2011

Shipov, Sergey. The Complete Hedgehog, volume 2. Mongoose 2011

The Bronznik and Greet books were excellent too but not opening book of the year good.

Amenaitos and Aagaard's Tarrasch book will of course be nominated when it comes out. I'm not sure if it will surpass Sakaev and Shipov but it looks excellent.

I also think Sakaevs book is superb. It's depth is way in excess of my needs and level, but it also has plenty of very useful, but concise, prose for me to learn from.

I think that Vigorito's KID set stands out. One thing I especially like about it is its extensive consideration of ideas that lie off its recommended paths. It's very complete in that way, and also very objective. "Production values" good as well.

Fluffy did his homework. The only thing I didn't like about the book was his recommendation of the Saemisch Panno. It is very unpleasant for black. I understand his rational for giving it (no one else had in quite some time and the pawn sacs in it are speculative fun) but it is very difficult for black against a prepared player of the white pieces. It's one of those lines that are bad in many ways and the problem is some of them are very simple.

I dont know if it is already mentioned:
The Ruy Lopez Move by Move, McDonald
is my nominee.

If you play the RL or ever plan to do so, this book is a must...

Hello,

I nominate the groundbreaking
Vladimir Barsky: The Ragozin Complex
A Guide for White and Black
New in Chess 2011

Barsky presents a difficult and interesting opening accessible for a wide range of playing strength. I don't know of any recent coverage of the whole Ragozin in English or German.

Starting point of Barsky has been Lipnitzky's legendary book "Questions of Modern Chess Theory", which includes analysis of the Ragozin not translated by Quality Chess. This way we get some history of the Ragozin en passent.

There is a very valuable introduction:
"How to study a chess opening" which every chessplayer should be aware of.

The Ragozin is presented in 64 deeply annotated games. Therefore this book teaches you middlegame principles, especially "better structure vs. better development" as well.

In my opinion this great book should make it to our short list at least.

Regards

limiting the candidates to just opening books reduces dramaticly the attractiveness of this refrandom !
Please think wider !  Wink

I think Vigorito's 2 King's Indian books were very good, but my favourite this year was Attacking Chess: The French by Williams, rich with explanations and gives the plans + ideas behind the moves, I also found the game format quite refreshing and I think his suggestion are good for practical club players who want to have an interesting game.

MortalGames, to be honest, I don't think we have very many people voting here who don't contribute. Last year, we had relatively few people voting. I don't think ballot stuffing will be an issue, but I will keep an eye out for it.
