I'll set up the poll soon.

In the mean time, I've reread the chesspub discussions over the past three years regarding whether we should vote for a book of the year or an opening book of the year.

This year may be exceptional, but the chesspublicans have preferred to vote for an opening book of the year.

We may want to cast a vote for a non-opening book as well, but it would be unofficial.

While our own poll seems to have stalled, the ChessCafe poll is down to three finalists.  The 4th rehash of Silman's book, a book on invisible moves, and the Gulko/Sneed book.

One wonders who votes in this poll.  Where are Karolyi's books on Karpov, Avrukh on the Gruenfeld, Kasparov's latest, Vigorito's two volumes on the Kings Indian, Experts on the Anti-Sicilians, Yusupov, Delchev, Sakaev or Nunn?  How can none of these be worthy of at least a top three finish?

I wanted to vote at first, but realized I hadn't bought any of the supposedly excellent works you list (though I have the Karolyi books on order now), so better to abstain! I would have had to vote for Silman's 4th too since I have that one, actually...

Maybe these "GM Repertoire" and similar opening books seem too advanced for the typical club player (i.e. more than 90% of chess players) so they stay away, no matter how good they are?

Plus, of course, opening books only reach those who have/want to have the opening in question in their repertoire. The three finalists have more universal appeal (as do most of the previous winners at ChessCafe).

Both Grunfeld books have some good parts, some holes, and some rather uninspiring repertoire choices.

I think only Kasparov's books (namely the My Great Predecessors, Modern Chess and Kasparov on Kasparov series), Seirawan's 'Chess Duels' and the Dvoretsky series match Avrukh's books in terms of quality.

I wasn't sure if Shipov's book fell into this year or 2010 but it seems this one, so I'll second that. It really is a terrific book.

Quite a rare sort of book too, even compared to super comprehensive repitoires and the like.

Also, awfully sorry, but Delchev's Grunfeld and Avrukh's are simply not on the same league...

I nominate BOTH Nunn's Understanding Middlegames (FANTASTIC, SUPERB) and of course, Emms book.

What books! It makes me glad I bought all the other rubbish, because I got these two too  Wink

I'd also like to nominate GM Repertoire: The Tarrasch Defence by Aagaard and Ntirlis. Published by Quality Chess about a week ago.

Chess Stars (or maybe just Mr Semkov on his own) typesets the Mongoose Press books so it's not inconceivable they design the covers too.

Wojo´s weapons 2:
publisher: Mongoose Press (usa)
Cover Design: Creative Center - Bulgaria
Printed in China

It seems, the usa has no media designers and no printing machines?!

It's quite simply significantly cheaper, even after factoring in shipping costs, to have books printed in China and transported to the US than it is to have the books printed domestically. I can't explain why the cover should have been designed in Bulgaria, though...
