I actually did not even see the statement at the top of the website stating that it was an opening theory site. But I still think certain opening books are so good that they can be picked for best book with regards to general chess as well as the opening.

Is Bronznik's "1.d4 - Beat The Guerillas!" allowed? A translation, but somewhat updated, mostly on the Schara-Hennig gambit, I think.

I guess this was meant as a nomination. Opening book in English, published in 2011 by New in Chess.

I have no idea what to nominate for a non-opening book of the year, since the only books that I have bought for the past two years have been opening books...

I will be opening up the final poll for the ChessPub OPENING book of the year later this weekend. It would be nice if we can have a winner by March 1st.

2-  Grandmaster vs Amateure ( by Quality chess) : an outstanding work by several world - class authors.

I second this nomination. The book was a fantastic read.

I just got this.  It's terrific.   Smiley

But not an opening book.  Wink

As far as Vigorito's books are concerned i'd like to say this: i don't know what to think of them! These books have many things that make me happy. I read them in pleasure just to stop at a particular point and say: "No,no this is wrong....". With a bit care at the details they'd fantastic really. I was very critical with the first volume at the QC blog (even Vigorito paricipated in the discussion with some harsh comments), later i changed my mind and later i was sceptical again! I haven't met a book that caused me this state of mind for so long. Probably the same happens with the KID in general, so that is probably the reason! Anyway, yes great books but not excellent.

Sakaev on Petroff: magnificent work! Wow! And the "extras" (Danish, King's Gambit, 4 Knighs game etc) fantastic additions that made me 100% happy. The only problem with such a book is the opening itself. Who wants to play it for Black? Memorise tons of lines on various dangerous systems just to make a draw? Simply this doesn't work on amateur level. I got he book though in order to find what to play with White, and in that respect this books served me well. I love it, it is really great.

RL move by move: great but many of his suggestions are...how to say it...second rated. He missed important details in the Yurtaev system and his proposal was promoted from him as best, he leaves out e=several other systems, his d3 repertoire was not as complete as he says...and so on. Yes, i love it too because McDonald is fantastic writer so i can recommend it.

Nimzo move by move: I am probably one of the few that disagree with the large majority of the recommendations? I cannot say that i am "the only one" because i know a solid GM (who is for sure a bigger expert that Emms in the Nimzo) that agrees with me!

Scotch by Dembo and Palliser on the other hand is a great book, so this should be nominated. Vigorito's Dragon book is also great but probably it got out on 2012, didn't it? And it lucks (again!) some depth in critical areas (not the same happens in Palliser's excellent Benoni work!).

These are some of my thoughts for now. More when the voting starts! Smiley

I like Vigorito's in depth and principled approaches to the classical, fianchetto, four pawns, and h3 but I think the Panno against the Saemisch is one of the worst lines strong grandmasters regularly play.

Opening works without a bibliography should be excluded from the poll. Setting a mimimum standard can only be good for such a competition. This is mainly a forum for buyers of chess books, so why not set the bar a little higher and ignore sloppy productions?

While our own poll seems to have stalled, the ChessCafe poll is down to three finalists.  The 4th rehash of Silman's book, a book on invisible moves, and the Gulko/Sneed book.

One wonders who votes in this poll.  Where are Karolyi's books on Karpov, Avrukh on the Gruenfeld, Kasparov's latest, Vigorito's two volumes on the Kings Indian, Experts on the Anti-Sicilians, Yusupov, Delchev, Sakaev or Nunn?  How can none of these be worthy of at least a top three finish?

A probable answer is average rated players who don't have the time or the inclination to read thousands of pages of analysis. The Silman book has been very popular with club players. The Gulko/Sneed book has rave reviews at Amazon. I was surprised to see the Invisible book. I've been interested in it myself.

Have you read either of the three nominated books? Have you read all the books you think are obviously better? For me (2000 player) reading books takes time.

Don't check me with no lightweight stuff.

If Nunn's Understanding Chess Middlegames from Gambit has not been nominated, I nominate it.

Also, I would like the nominate the Chess Evolution series which are edited by Naiditsch. I know it is unusual to nominate a periodical but they are very exceptional, came out within last year, and I've easily gotten more use out of them than any other opening books.
