It seems that one more Benko book is on the way after Aveskulov, this time by Sergey Kasparov - The Dynamic Benko Gambit: A Complete Repertoire for Black (New in Chess, 288 pag, Dec)

It has been said that chess players are good at two things, Chess and Excuses.  It has also been said that Chess is where all excuses fail! In order to win you must dare to fail!

I had thought that 5...Qa5 was Black's best reply to 5.Bg5, but I'd still rather be White. 5.de6 fe6 6.cb5 a6! isn't a problem but 5.Bf4 could be tricky from a theoretical perspective.

I am curious to see in the new book the variation: 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 c5 4.d5 b5 5.Bg5 exd5 (or some improvement over 5...b4 Nisipeanu) 6.cxd5 d6 7.e3 a6 8.a4 b4 to avoid White stronghold on the c4 square.

Is it just me, or is Attack With Black an awfully odd title for a book focusing solely on a Black repertoire after 1.d4 Nf6? There's no mention of 1.d4, the Benko, the opening, the fact that it's a repertoire book, or anything of that sort in the title!

Quite.

Maybe. In the games Milov transposed to the Benoni and won, so maybe he's not too concerned about an advantage for white at move four...

If black is looking for a way to play a Benko/Volga structure against both Nf3 and Nc3, why not play The Kamchatka variation?

It's another idea from Martens' lab and probably the one that has been best received by the chess community. It was debated a lot in corr circles back in the 1980s, but it still seems to have some strong practitioners.

Nowadays, it seems to be played very flexibly, with Black ready to e.g. also play a Modern Benoni or Snake Benoni at times...

For me, the Blumenfeld is one of the most tricky openings to face over-the-board.

As to whether it's actually sound, it seems to survive in correspondence. But it's not very popular.

3...cxd4 4.Nxd4 e5 5.Nb5 d5 is even a gambit and possibly sounder than the Blumenfeld.
But I think Willempie meant 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 b5 4.Nf3 and now ...e6. Alias must have forgotten about this too as there is no objection against this move order, assuming that Black plays the Benkö of course. It's reasonable to assume that when discussing a book on that opening.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

I think that yes, the Blumenfeld is sound but only in the following move order:

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 b5 4.Nf3 e6 5.dxe6

(Note that after 5.Bg5 if you combine Marin's CBM article with the recommendations of Alterman that improve over Geogriev's analysis, you have a sound weapon against that popular line that seems OK from a theoretical perspective)

5...fxe6 6.cxb5 and now not 6...d5 which is met by Nbd2+e3+b3 etc waiting for e5 to hit with e4! (check tha database for that. White's score is very high and computer likes that a lot for White)

but 6...a6! as it was recommended by Rogozenko in a SOS article.

That may be an idea. I dont have a clue on the theoretical status, but who cares? It is not like the Benko is a regular visitor at Tata.

It hadn't occurred to me before reading this thread, but if you believe in the Blumenfeld, you could make up a Modern Benoni repertoire and plan to react to 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 with 2...c5 3.d5 b5. My point is that if 3.c4, after which a Benko player would go 3...g6 with transposition to Benko main lines, you would instead play 3...e6. And ain't that a Blumenfeld?

As for 3.Bg5, Petersen's book has some very useful ideas following 3...Ne4.

But is the Blumenfeld sound?

After 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.Nf3, I don't like 3...e6. Why not exchange a wing pawn for a center pawn, for Pete's sake?

Fitting a complete repertoire for Black against 1.d4 containing a large amount of novelties in 176 pages is a big ask, but I won't make any judgements until I see the book.

It's interesting that Aveskulov wants to combine the Blumenfeld with the Benko (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.Nf3 e6 4.d5 b5), since it would seem more logical to play 3...cd4 as after 4.Nc3 Black doesn't have anything better than 4...cd4 if he wants to avoid a Semi-Tarrasch. Perhaps his intention is 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 c5 3.d5 e6 4.c4 b5, and after 4.Nc3, 4...b5 as advocated in 'Dangerous Weapons: Benoni and Benko'.

I think your assumption may be wrong. It may be that he only goes for the Blumenfeld in the Benko "declined" with 4.Nf3. So it may be similar to the Alterman gambit book (Benko, Blumenfeld and the "Vaganian" gambit against 3.Nf3). That would make it interesting, in particular if he adds on the lines which Alterman doesnt deal with (as that is not a repertoire book).
