Chess partner on the iPad is capable of multi variation analysis - although your ability to delete moves and promote lines in non-existent.

I guess the engine won't be as strong as Shredder, but it depends on what you are after

Anymore, I just use Shredder on my iPhone. I can do tactics training (simple positions) til I'm blue in the face. I can also access many online sites with it. It weighs much less than most books, and fits more easily in my pocket.  And, I carry it with me anyway!

Excellent topic !

As jupp said , I'm confident that the best combination is a real paper  book + a modern PPC equipped with an strong chess engine like Pocket Fritz 4.(chessbase).( with Htc hd2 it gets to 2800 elo power in Multi variant analysis) . Also it's more handleable than a tablet. At present neither on iOS  app store nor on android's there's no app capable of Multi variant analysis.

This sounds old-fashioned, but perhaps a chess book? I often bring a chess book with me so I can read it, usually an opening book like Grandmaster Repertoire.

Sorry if this reads ironic. But it's really meant serious:

A book and a pocket chess game and a scrapbook stays the best choice.

This comes from someone disliking cell phones and liking computers. If you really like cell phones: There are loads of apps able to read and write pgn. Search and decide. I didn't find anything really convincing.

Looking for something portable to study chess?

Hi all,

Getting back into chess. I been wanting to get something portable that maybe I could watch a video, look at a chess bass trainer, do some tatics, go over some games (like maybe put some of my opening variations on it) and maybe a playing program. I was wondering if all that could be done on a tablet or ipad, kindle, or maybe another brand of tablet. Anyone have any experience with that? Is it easy or can I even do all that on one device? Can anyone reconmend which would be best for this?

I do have my laptop, but was looking for something smaller so I can bring to work, look at lunch, etc....

Thanks.
