Surely the easy solution to find winning chances is 4. Bd2 c5, very unbalancing, sound, and interesting.  Now what to play against 4.Nbd2?  That's the real question...

While I agree that it is difficult to play for a win in the Bogo Indian, but in my experience 1600 players tend to make all kind mistakes agianst it. If opponnets has 2000 or higher in rating the game usually becomes a draw.

I agree with MrCookie. It's hard to play for a win with Bogo-Indian. One of my recent correspondent games went like this:

And yet, I agree with Gilchrist is a legend. In an OTB game the better player has to refuse the draw offers trying to outplay his opponent even in the equal endgames. Although the question is: "Why I have to play such an opening and then try to outplay my opponent in an equal endgame?.. Why not playing KID, or Modern Benoni, or even QID where chances to outplay your opponent are way better?"..  Huh

Also, I had a friend who was around 2250 and played the Bogo almost exclusively. He played it against all rating groups, from 1500 to 2500, and still did well with it. Even if a 1600 played the opening well and ended up with an equal endgame, he simply refused all draw offers and positionally outplayed them in the middlegame and endgame, even if only two pairs of pieces remained on the board. So if a 1600 plays well in the opening, one has to continue playing. Most likely that player is 1600 because he or she will be outplayed later in the game, even if it takes 60 or 70 moves.

1600 players might have some trouble if you vary with the snake-benoni.. d4 Nf6 c4 e6 Nf3 c5 d5 exd cxd Ld6. Then study among others the games of Gashimov and Miezis.

If the positions are equal and they played the opening very well, just try to outplay them. There is no other choice since the Bogo is not very dynamic compared to the King's Indian or Grünfeld or Semi-Slav. Maybe try the Queen's Indian or Benoni?

Bogo-Indian against lower rated

I've played the bogo-indian for years with good results.
My problem is playing lower rated players, its damn hard to win! I've got OK positions even against GM in the bogo, so I really like the defense and would never give it up.

I follow the chess openings for black explained repertoire, and the lines recommended can end up in drawish positions even 1600 players easily can hold.

I'm now looking for alternatives to 4...Qe7 in the main-line. I've looked at 4...a5, but still its very drawish.

Also been looking at this funny move order 1.d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nf3 Nc6, just to mess things up a little, and maybe go into a kings indian kind of positions instead.

What do you other bogo-indian players have to recommend? To play for the whole point, 4...Qe7 is almost out of the question in my opinion.
