Andor Lilienthal reports a phrase of Havasi iirc: "I don't play bad because I feel sickly. I feel sickly because I play bad."
The Dutch version is a little stronger: My name is hare, I don't know anything. It's from German origin:

Hmm, 'Hier steht ich und kann nicht anders' might also be a candidate, taken literally. ;)

However, one nice point of the Swedish original is that it would often be interpreted as something like "I don't want to say it, but I agree of course." and people are usually happy if they think you agree with them...

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

Yes, it's one of the most common examples in lectures on how to spot a liar. :))

If only he had known about 'I ain't saying anything, so I haven't said anything.' :)

Really? I got the impression that British English is littered with expressions of a similar kind, though more passive-aggressive in nature perhaps. Like: "It's my fault." etc. The Full English Breakfast on Fb had a nice list a few weeks ago. :))

A rep for real life?

I came to think of an old member of my chess club whom I never met. But allegedly his standard phrase when someone tried to get him on his side in a discussion or similar was: 'I ain't saying anything, so I haven't said anything.' - (Jag säger ingenting, så har jag ingenting sagt.) - a phrase that kept him out of trouble for decades! :)

Any other suggestions for lines that one should consider having in one's real life repertoire, ready for instant use?
