Well, I wouldn't play 3.dxe5 anyway, as I don't like that sort of early simplification. A problem for me might be that I have to be careful with an early Nf3 for not being move-ordered into the main line King's Indian as I try to manage on the Averbakh.  Undecided

Problem, problem? Not especially. But its certainly playable and very independent of the KID. With 3 de de 4 Qxd8+ etc not working so well, you do need something.

As well 3 d5 ^ 3.. f5 4 e4 etc, 3 Nf3 e4 4 Ng5 and  3 Nc3 ed 4 Qxd4 Nc6 both seem to transpose to English opening main lines so not trivial could well be worth it with effort.

Think that if I was going 1 d4 I'd want to look into those rather than 2 e4 which does have quite a lot of things attached.

Is there any particular problem (from White's point of view) with 1.d4 d6 2.c4 e5?
(I must admit a blind spot concerning this move order yet)  Embarrassed

Personally I would go for the Pirc/Philidor as White - there are plenty of decent and interesting lines.

1..d6 can also be a way into the Leningrad side-stepping the anti- dutch lines - in my experience that is more common as a transposition. You may have a line you are happy with there but it;s something to be aware of.

I just reply 2.e4, and if 2...Nf6 3.f3.  There's not much "1.e4 theory" there; if Black wants to avoid transposing to a Benoni or KID there's only really 3...e5 and 3...d5, neither of which I'm losing sleep over.

I once got move ordered into a Sämisch Variation by 1. d4 d6 2. Bg5, so one to watch for.

Also have a look at 1. d4 d6 2. c4 e5 3. d5 which even though it looks commital, the positional pawn sac 3. ...f5 4. e4 is interesting. It's a recommended line in Richard Pallisers's Play d4!

What does White play against 1 d4 d6 when he does not have a Nf3 system against the KID in his repertoire (for example, he might just play the Averbach or Samisch variations against the KID)?

1 d4 d6 2 Nf3 allows Black to get a Nf3 KID (if White plays c4)
1 d4 d6 2 e4 involves learning some 1 e4 theory
1 d4 d6 2 c4 allows 2...e5.

Would others, like me, be a little underwhelmed about the possibility of playing against 1 d4 d6 2 c4 e5? If so, I am not sure whether there is another solution other than White either learning some 1 e4 theory or a Nf3 system against the KID.
