One of my early articles for Chesscafe was "A Queen on Wheels". It was about a Scandinavian line where Qa5 was chased over the board. In a later ChessCafe article the evaluation dropped to +/-. Rescue it, then you earn the right to give it a new name.
Well, I've never really been a fan of either ABBA or repeated Q-moves...

I always thought that to be the "Material Girl" Variation?  Undecided

There is no doubt some lines of the Najdorf Poisoned Pawn deserve that name.
The Najdorf Poisoned Pawn is of course "Gimme Gimme Gimme" ;)

There must be zillions of variations out there which appropriately might be called "Waterloo".  Smiley

Any candidate for "Kill the King"?

I am all for honoring the creative minds of Abba though. We could call the line "Benny Attack" and the older 1.e4 c6 2.Nc3 d5 3.Nf3 Bg4 4.h3 Bh5 5.exd5 cxd5 6.g4 Bg6 7.Ne5 "Björn Attack". Both lines have the "Knight in Bangkok" in common. For those who don't speak English let's just say that Ne5 makes "a tough man tumble".

My 2 cents...
An interesting suggestion, especially since there's a rule about remembering who is who of B & B "The one who looks like his name is Björn (i.e. bear) is Benny" so having two similar lines named after them would be logical in some way somehow I suppose! :))

Btw, surely you must have discovered at least one unnamed variation in some opening that could be named the "Dancing Queen"?!

Agnetha's Folly might draw more attention though.

Why? ...

Why not? This poll's result will probably not influence the way the majority of chess players talk about the variation in question in the future. Nevertheless George started this poll, maybe because he is curious about the opinion of the forum members, or he wants to find a name he likes better than "Apocalyse Variation". Anyway, in a certain sense this poll is his "property".
Now there are (at least) two forum members, TN and me, who would like to widen the poll's options. If George objects, then I would respect that. But I can't see a possible reason for him doing so. Of course, it would be very nice to hear George's opinion about that!

Hi sorry about not following this a little more closely.  I sort of don't see the point in widening the number of poll options at this point -- it seems the verdict is in and Apocalypse has won.  Nothing added at this point would be likely to overtake it, and would actually make the poll invalid -- sorry I'm a former market research director so I'm quite familiar with these things.

What I might do at some point is create a free online poll at another address and then link to that, both here and in other forums (e.g chess.com's openings forum).  And what I'm probably going to do, though I know I'm not supposed to skew the results this way, is put Apocalypse (and Bangkok Knight -- sorry) as the last option(s) because they do not fit the typical way of naming a variation after a place, a player, or some element on the board.

Nevertheless I expect Apocalypse to win Sad  Really I can never see myself referring to it as such without prefixing it with "the so-called ...."

As a moderator of this forum I could add the poll options myself, but since both suggestions are my own I feel this would be an abuse of my moderating powers.

Fair enough. Maybe you wait for a certain time, and if George doesn't contradict, you might do that!?
Why? Nothing wrong with inventing funny names, but they must also stand the test of time and judging from the poll the Apocalypse has done just that...

Besides, 4.Ne5 isn't bad enough to deserve more than one name. ;)

Maybe I should have had this poll all along.

George, can you modify your poll? Then I would vote for "Bangkok Knight".  Smiley

I'd suggest including 'The Cernousek Attack' (as he was the first strong player to play this line) as well. As a moderator of this forum I could add the poll options myself, but since both suggestions are my own I feel this would be an abuse of my moderating powers.
