I think the difference with Sokolov's case and mine is that I regularly had lost positions before move 20 with 1. e4 Smiley

Its actually possilbe to lose as white with 1 d4 under 20 moves even for GMs! GM Sokolov played a risky line vs GM Aronian in Nimzo Indian game with Qc2 and was forced to resign at move 19! And Sokolov is leeding white player in both Qc2 and e3 Nimzo Indian! The point is that its risky to play sharp mainlines if one does not know or has forgotten theory!

I switched from 1. d4 from 1. e4 when I spent more than one hour on the first 15 moves of a 6. Bg5 Najdorf whilst playing against an IM, and almost lost on time.

And yes, the Petroff is annoying to play against. The Berlin Wall is probably even more annoying to play against. And then I had a lost position around move 15 against Magesh Panchanathan when I played against the Chigorin Spanish.

So one of the reasons I never play 1. e4 again is that I usually do not have lost positions within the first 20 moves after 1. d4.

Since I switched from 1.e4 to 1.d4 my games have become significantly sharper and I myself have become much happier. I will only consider to take up 1.e4 again if I know what to do against the dreaded Russian/Petrov Defence. No, 5.Nc3 isn't very attractive either. Of course I might change my mind if confronted with fascinating lines.
  
The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

About sharpness in 1 e4 vs e d4, I agree that after 1 e4 the play becomces more direct after 1 d4. But about sharpness, there are ultra sharp lines even in solid openings like Nimzo Indian. It depends on what white plays and on blacks reply to it etc.  Botvinnik Semi Slav is a so sharp opening that not even computers have a idea of how to evalute the positions! Dutch can also leeds to extremly sharp play. I also think that Topalov once said something like "1 d4 leeds to more romantic play than 1 e4 these days".

Probably, but when I played 1. e4 I played 3. Nd2 against the Caro-Kann whilst never knowing why.

Didn't Tal produce a famous crush against that line? It is in his book of best games (greatest chess book ever?)  I don't have it to hand right now but I recall he simply played 4.a3 when his opponent could think of nothing better than 4...dxe4 5.Nxe4 when black would have been much better off if he could put the a and b pawns back on their original squares.

I thought the reason to prefer 3.Nd2 in the Caro was that it was more flexible if black avoided 3...dxe4. Specifically, if black tries to switch to a Gurgenidze formation with 3...g6 then white still has the option of reinforcing his center with c3. Also, he can consider arranging his knights with Ne2 and Ndf3.

But there have been very high-level repertoire books for 1. d4, 1. c4, or 1. Nf3, most based on main lines and theoretical variations: Avrukh, Schandorff, Marin, Ippolito/Hilton, Kaufman, etc. Maybe since 1. d4 (Closed games) and 1. c4/Nf3 (Flank games) are less forcing generally than 1. e4? Apart from the Botvinnik Semi-Slav and King's Indian Mar Del Plata, is really 1. d4/1. c4/1. Nf3 comparable to 1. e4 in sharpness?

Hi,

I`m sure that it will be 3.Nd2 against both the French and the Caro! For sure!
3.e5 against the Caro and 3.Nc3 against the French are the moves for Aagaard in his GM-Rep.  Wink

I can recommend the 2 Sam Collin's repertoires,
one is book, the other one dvd
they differ that one has Scotch, French Advance and the other has Italian and French Nd2, I recommend the later,
but it's only a DVD so, it's not really the same as a book.
If you want a middle ranged opening with white with not too much theory I would go for this kind of repertoire.
