Would anyone consider Gelfand a legitimate WC (i.e. Kasparov, Karpov etc.) if he beat Anand in a 12 game match?

Gelfand won the right to challenge so long ago that it makes harder to get excited about this match.

As Kasparov recently noted, this is the first WCChamp match in a long time where the challenger is clearly not the best nor the second best player.

But it is not Gelfand's fault that Aronian lost in the short match format. And it is not Gelfand's fault that Carlsen dropped out.

I thought Gelfand played the Grünfeld regularly? Anyway I hope there are more Grünfelds, it has now become my most favourite opening, even more than the Najdorf. But I only want to know, which opening did you expect?

And also, there are the two volumes on the Grünfeld written by his fellow countryman Avrukh, so if I were Gelfand I would not hesitate to play the Grünfeld Smiley

Probably a bit surprised, but there's also I think a tendency to see if the person new to WC matches is going to give you a present of the first game - it has after all happened enough times! -  thus playing something reasonably testing but not super critical.

Like that exchange slav that Kramnik tried in game 1 vs Anand.

Gelfand surprised just about everyone by choosing the Grunfeld in game one. He's never played the Black side of the Grunfeld in a serious game before.

I don't think he really surprised Anand that much. Just take a look at his seconds: Eljanov, Rodshtein and Huzman. All well-known Grünfeld-experts. It could well be that Avrukh is also part of his team.
Nigel Short said during the game that in order to receive the Israeli passport, you have to play the Grünfeld. It really seems that everyone in Israel is playing the Grünfeld.

Well I certainly hope he was surprised, because if this was his major preparation it doesnt bode well for Anand

Bit of a side-line that Bb5+ line Anand played isn't it? Or is this the new thing against the Gruenfeld? If Gruenfeld holds up maybe Anand will go back to the good ol 1.e4  Smiley

He managed to get an equal position and a draw by move 24!

I always watch the games on ICC. The GM commentary there is excellent even if some of the other kibitzes are .. off-topic.

What web sites are going to be showing the games as they happen?

Maybe this one:
http://www.anand-gelfand.com/
Wink

Nope. Don't see the game as it's happening, unless I'm looking in the wrong place. But clicking on "Game 1" doesn't take me to a live game. It looks like just a holding spot where they'll put the games after they're over.

I found live coverage at these sites:
http://moscow2012.fide.com/en/live?g=20120511
http://www.chessdom.com/anand-gelfand-game-1-live/

Anyone have recommendations for sites to watch the games based on the quality of the commentary?

The Semi-Slav could be played by both !!  We might get 4 e3 v the Slav,
Nimzo /QGD are likely.  If we're lucky a Najdorf .

Gelfand Petroff vs. 1.e4 and semi-slav vs. closed?
Gelfand will not play 1.e4, probably mostly 1.d4 with some 1.Nf3 in between ...
I guess Anand will play both 1.e4 and 1.d4, but 1.d4 will dominate due to the petroff ...
I expect Semislav or Queen's Gambit declined or Gruenfeld  from Anand, and against e4 either the closed spanish or spanish with Bc5 or the najdorf ...

For me, a more interesting discussion would turn around the question of what openings each player will use as White and Black. I've already posted my predictions of their choice of openings.

Well, we cannot really assess that as he may be hiding his preparation and also saving up energy. The same thing was happening in tournaments before his match with Topalov. But during the match he showed to be well prepared.

gelfand is a worthy challenger,
he qualified in the k.o. knockout where the likes of aronian, topalov, grishuk, etc. took part in ...
also he placed 2nd in the wch tournament that anand won ... he has been a top player a decade ago ...
I think Gelfand *must* play his best chess in this match tomorrow, because he will never get the chance again to aim at the title.
Because tbh. the era of Carlsen/Aronian has begun right now, and I guess one of these two will be the sucessor ... Gelfand must take his chance now or he will be forgotten ... Anand has won everything and just doesn't have the motivation, he has not played really good chess in the last 2 years, in my very honest opinion this match is a match between almost 2 equally strong opponents ... if Gelfand is really highly motivated, he might even have an edge!

I see Anand by four and the end of any future Gelfand aspirations for the title.
