yea that's definitely true, Gelfand will probably be the happier after the 4 games, but he has been saying in the press conferences a lot that he is trying to play by the situation on the board rather than to a match strategy, and I don't think he did that today. He is very well prepared of course as you would expect, and I think to consider him to be cannon fodder going into the match would be a pretty naive view.

Also you could say that as the match goes on without a win the pressure could actually build on Gelfand more, as I am presuming that a 6-6 score would mean Anand would retain the title (?).

I see what you mean, but I think there's a reason for him to play like this. Gelfand is the underdeog, and underdogs usually do better in shorter matches. He has now "survived" four games without using too much energy. He's shown that he is very well prepared, that he's not the cannon-fodder many believed him to be. Four straight, very solid draws might just be enough to have Anand wondering what it may take to beat Gelfand.
From a psycholigical point of view, gelfand is the winner so far. Not by much, but still.

well this is pretty disappointing, lack of fight from Gelfand today with White it seems, no real attempt to pose Anand any problems from a fairly promising position.

Interesting stuff today.  Can anyone please tell me if it's possible to watch the commentary on Playchess for free, or do you need to buy a subscription? Daniel King's commentary is always the best. cheers

It's free if you are a Premium member. Otherwise you have to pay. However ChessBase show a couple of summarised video reports by Daniel King on their site if you aren't willing to pay for a subscription.

Anand's team will do the Grünfeld job. I think he will be testing Gelfand in different lines until he maybe gets tired and then makes a punch with a prepared weapon. Just like boxing: prepare your opponent before striking.

not sure about this tbh. It's a bit like leaving your best player on the subs bench until the second half, if you go a couple of goals down and then he doesn't score you would wish you'd brought him on earlier.

I can't believe that Gelfand is completely versed in all the lines of the Grunfeld. There are just too many of them. Even Svidler gets burned occasionally playing the Black side of the Grunfeld.

I expect Anand will keep plugging away at the Grunfeld, getting a slight edge each time, and eventually breaking through.  I don't think he'll give up on playing the white side of the Grunfeld. He has reached interesting positions twice in a row even if he didn't get the decisive result.

Svidler is a lazy guy but a natural chess genius.
Gelfand is a hard working machine with with some talented oil in it.

Gelfand held the draw despite going slightly astray nearer the end nb6 earlier was easy =
Vishy needs a novelty as Gelf is well-prepped Smiley !

Another draw today in game 3 - Anand went for the f3 business against the Grunfeld this time. From the press conference seemed like Anand was trying to say he missed some winning chances, but from a first look I couldn't see anything clear and the ...Nb6 improvement earlier would've equalized without all the stress. We await the GM analysts verdict.

Grunfeld game was pretty interesting with a new idea which Gelfand dealt with quite comfortably-

I am not convinced that Vishy is in the best form of late but his level of prep is up a notch here.  I wouldn't be shocked if he went 1nf3 or 1 c4 , failing that 4 bg5 v grunfeld.

I agree, for me the Grunfeld one had some real tension. The only boring decision was Anand allowing the exchange of his Bishop in game 2 because he feared keeping the pieces on the board would lead to trouble. But before that it was a very interesting game.

I agree, fairly boring games so far....but give it time! World Championships tend to take some time before they pick up
