Another tame game ! Vishy's prep was very convincing.
4 e3 doesn't look like it gives any advantage. I don't really know why Gelfand went into this line as most Black moves were natural and easy to find.

Think that'd make it far too much a test of phsyical/mental stamina than is entirely healthy Smiley

24 seemed to work nicely and say 16/18 probably enough to work well. 12 is a bit short.

Perhaps unless they add €2.000.000 more to the prize funds for both winner and loser? I would play 64 games to win a few million €, even if I lose the series Smiley

Continue with the "active" Grünfeld and risk a loss (close enough yesterday)?

I agree that continuing the Grunfeld is potentially a high risk choice for Gelfand.

Although, AFAICT, Gelfand was actually fine from the opening in Game 3 and could have made his life much easier had he found the computer-favored 23. - Nb6!.

How about 64 games, one each day consecutively, for 64 squares on the board? It sounds excessive, but if there is a majority winner it will clearly indicate how much better one plays than the other based on the size of the majority of winning percentage.

lets face it, 12 games is too short. It shouldn't come down to 1 decisive game, or rapid like you say.

Well - "turning up the heat" or "running into your opponent's knife"?

Well, in game one it looked like Gelfie had the chance to grind away with a small advantage - though still a likely draw, but he chose another line that more or less secured the draw. Still, if you get an edge with black you should at least try to win - if you want to win the match.

Surprisingly, Gelfand has actually had some chances to turn up the heat a little as black but never really tried so far. Maybe he's hoping to lull Anand into over-confidence and then suddenly strike out with black?
Anand may like to see Gelfand risking something - GM Timman was suggesting a knight sac in game 3 - it looked interesting, but in the end...? - Win by provocation?

I'd agree its even stevens. I don't think you can say Anand has been pressing Gelfand more than Gelfand pressing Anand - in the game where Anand ended up having his best chance (the f3 Grunfeld) he was in huge time pressure to get there and it could have been a different story completely quite easily. We are down to 8 games now, so its a bit like `poker really, first one to lose his nerve is in big trouble...

I think Gelfand will have a headache for his next Black game. Continue with the "active" Grünfeld and risk a loss (close enough yesterday)? Admit that the Grünfeld is not safe enough and play the Slav - then getting passive positions where he will be tortured for hours?

My prediction: Anand will win the Championship with the one and only decisive game Nr. 7!

While I agree that in general that a string of draws favors Gelfand, the narrative of the match after four games doesn't.  As White, Anand is seriously probing Gelfand's Grunfeld, and as Black (so far), he is holding comfortably.

If that narrative continues, Gelfand will continue to find himself in uncomfortable positions as Black and not doing much to hold his own serve. If this were an 8 game match, Anand may be worried now. As it is, Anand should be feeling fairly comfortable so far. He's playing himself into form.

If there are no decisive results after eight games, Anand may consider changing his strategy. But I don't know exactly what he'd do differently in the opening.
