I do not think the players think it is boring when they play their games. If I were at that stage, which will never happen, I would fathom that I would feel very nervous in the beginning matches, because losing would cause a severe drop in momentum for the amount of games in the future rounds. I would rather play solid than try to play the Botvinnik Semi-Slav and Mar Del Plata in the first few games. I do not think most in this forum, if spectators were watching their games, would think to themselves, "People are watching, I should probably play like a lunatic every game to get an extremely unclear position, with the sole objective that the spectators are entertained." I am certainly not getting up at 7 A.M. for these games. Where is there a sleepy smiley face?

I say calm down. The match is only one-third of the way through. The best is yet to come, I am sure.

Also the match isn't boring, though unfamiliarity with anything other than attacking the opponent's king could give that impression.

The only game in this match that I liked so far was game 4 becouse of all the pieces at d file Smiley.

What is more, there was at least one piece of each kind except for a king.

I would not describe the match boring, only partly unintersting. Both players are playing extremly solid so far so I predict that all games will be draws untill tiebreaks.

so true kramnik only became wch in the rapids against topalov,

with 16/24 games, topalov would still be world champion,
and we wouldn't see this boring spiceless chess that we are seeing now!!!
Tbh. this match has the potential to become the most boring chess match for world championship in the entire history of chess!
I want to see Topalov against one of them or Aronian vs. Carlsen!!!

Ah yes, decide the World ch by a rapid play, didnt we have that before? Lets hope it doesnt happen again.

Topalov is currently ranked 12th in the world, and he lost the first round of the Candidates against Kamsky.

Also the match isn't boring, though unfamiliarity with anything other than attacking the opponent's king could give that impression.

You do realize the match with Kramnik went to the rapids is because Topalov was given a free point for "Toilet-gate."  Kramnik won the match fair and square on the board in regulation, and a second time in the rapids.

You must be too young to have lived through the first Karpov-Kasparov match in 1984-85. Many of the 48 games over a 5-6 month span were short draws, with the players reversing colors for the next game, playing the exact same opening line, and agreeing to a draw. Historically, the same "draws are boring" argument was made about the Alekhine-Capablanca match in 1927. Heck, I recall people complaining about the 8 draws to start the Kasparov-Anand match in 1995.

Anand-Gelfand match is boring and spiceless? Not to me.

This has been quite a common view for a long time, but quite a mistaken one. You can say that most players over 40 are declining from their peek, but chess is not football and I'd say there must be several examples of players approaching their peek at this age. Conclusion: concentrate on the chess and don't worry what age they are.

Yermolinsky (GOTD on chess.fm) sees both as old men and especially Anand without "chess fire" (he is even talking about burn out).

Another Yermo thought:
+40 players should go to a "senior-tour" and the young should fight for real.

My opinion:
In chess it does not matter how old you are but how well you perform. The old ones are not to blame if the young guys can't beat them.

btw: I am mid-40 and still chess hungry Cool

To me it seemed noone was willing to risk much as of yet. They are testing the waters and maybe trying to get into form (as SF pointed for Anand).

I think both players will try to achieve a knock out during the classical phase of the match, as both are good in fast play and the rapids & blitz section will more or less be a gamble.

If the match could be described as a single chess game, then we are basically witnessing a 1. d4 opening: gradual build up of pressure which will most probably explode into wild tactics & violent attacks!

Not pushing long enough for that Smiley

Suspect that the moves might look easy to find but really aren't. Certainly not to equalise fully anyway.

Another tame game ! Vishy's prep was very convincing.
4 e3 doesn't look like it gives any advantage. I don't really know why Gelfand went into this line as most Black moves were natural and easy to find.

Maybe he hopes that Anand will run out of coffee?
