Thanks for the games. About 5.Qe2. Berg gives the following line ending with compensation in Chess Informant 115. I am not sure yet to what degree I agree with the moves played/ the final assessment but at the very least it does not look too comfortable for White. Against the right opponent 3...e5  may be good practical weapon.

From http://www.365chess.com/opening.php?m=7&n=86487&ms=e4.e6.d4.d5.Nd2.e5 I got few games:

Fleckner, H vs Gnilomedov, I
Soelter, R vs Wesselowski, L
Kieninger, G vs Lachmann, H

+1 with kylemeister: I have (just now) the same recorded (old?) line for White (4.de instead of 4.ed)...and no more recorded moves after 5.Qe2 +=

Got also name from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_chess_openings_named_after_places
New Castle Gambit of the (French Defense Tarrasch variation) 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2 e5

...but the real name can be "Steinitz's gambit" ....

Read a pretty nice quote here : http://frenchdefenseellisgambit.weebly.com/ web page about Ellis gambit (transposition to first post positions).

Don't miss the end about encounter between IM Ron Gross and R.J. (Bobby) Fischer...  Cool

Don't know, but the first thing I think of (probably an old book recommendation) is 4. de de 5. Qe2.  I think this has probably come up here before.

Is there any consensus on what White's best response to the move 3...e5!? against the Tarrasch is?

My only attempt with Black so far started off with

to end in a repetition moves before move 30.

I am also curious if Black can improve upon 0-0-0, Bxe2 and f6. I did not have the feeling that my compensation was sufficient.
