I think the moral of Svidler-Andreikin is, to coin a phrase, that 'young man, when you play such a bizarre opening you should not be surprised if you lose'. And Lord knows what Mamedjarov was playing at - did he muddle up his preparation somehow?

K-K very interesting though.

Perhaps we could share some good links?  Which is the official site, how are people following the games?  I found this:

http://www.chessdom.com/candidates-chess-2014-live/

And this seems to be the official site, which took longer to find than it should have:
http://candidates2014.fide.com/

Any other good links?

By the way, looks like Svidler's winning from the White side of a Kalashnikov, so TonyRo's book might be delayed a bit more looking for a solution.

Just teasing Wink.  Maybe TonyRo can give us his thoughts on the opening of that game, though (I'd post the score but it's not over yet).

Edit: OK the game just finished, here's the score:

Some really great games so far.  It looks to me like Kramnik is winning his game, and here's Aronian's nice queen trap that took me completely by surprise:

Second round is full of exciting games. I'm impressed with the unbalanced positions (written after Ng3 by Kramnik). Is Mamedyarov just busted ?

I think Aronian hanging a piece like that counts as moderately unexpected! Yes in a not great position by then.

Glad to see Anand winning that game mind because if black can play the Marshall where white has played d3 instead of c3, why on earth are we playing the Lopez?

Not unexpected to me at all. Anand is still a very poweful and Universal player. Ok, he has not shown his best recently, but the guy has defended the title successfully against Topalov, Gelfand and Kramnik! all opponents with contrasting styles, yet he prevailed. That says and means a lot.

One cannot overcome Carlsen relying on the Marshall and Berlin alone in my humble opinion. Aronian needs additional  weapons in his arsenal against 1.e4 and that goes double for Kramnik. Great players both, but they need to widen the net a bit, their repertoires are way too narrow.

Early days yet though, and I'm sure there will be many more revelations as the tournament wears on.

Of course Anand is able to beat any other player in the world. No doubt about it. However he didn't show very convincing performances lately and I he beat Aronian where is well-prepared ...

Wow, unexpected start. Aronian just lost to Anand. All other games drawn. Though this is quite a long tournament, so anything can still happen of course.

Kramnik, Svidler and Toppy all got to be happy drawing with Black and Aronian losing.

Very early days, but this will be a test of character for Aronian now.

Often markedly different who you'd like to win something and who you obviously think will Smiley
(Although plenty of people in this thread seemingly voting based on the former anyway!).

It was locked in order to have the discussion in one place. It is still possible to vote in the other poll, but comments about the tournament are easier to follow if they are all in one place.

Why was this similar thread http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1394265517 locked?

Many opinion results are slightly determended by the formulation of the frase.

In the other thread I voted for Topalov since I would like him to win.

In this thread I voted for Kramnik since I think he will win.

Voted for Kramnik. Emotional reason as much as anything; I enjoy the way he plays the game when he is in top form.

The tournament is wide open as far as I'm concerned. There isn't supposed to be luck in chess, but catching multiple opponents on off-days can happen.
