Kramnik has no psychological fear of Carlsen like Anand did, and a good record to boot. To be honest if Kramnik did qualify I would put him favourite to beat Carlsen, but qualifying will be easier said than done.

Yes I agree Kramnik is unbeatable when on top form. To me Kramnik is a modern-day Botvinnik with many profound conceptual ideas based on a gifted understanding of pawn structures. Quite often his novelties are not one-off ideas but deep concepts which create new paths in theory.

Like Botvinnik he is capable of holding his own against sharp tacticians (see all his wins against Naiditsch and Mamedyarov). I love watching Kramnik's white games - they appear to have a "smashing" or "squashing" quality on his good day: he either smashes his opponents to smithereens (with a deep novelty) or squashes them like a bug (with a deep positional concept).

His main weakness seems to be a rather predictable Black repertoire but I guess he thinks it is more productive spending more time and energy on finding interesting ideas for White. My money is on Kramnik for this tournament!!

Despite Anand's World Championship tenure and Carlsen's climb to #1 (and subsequent world title victory), it's really hard for me to imagine that anyone in the last 14 years is better than a top-form Kramnik.  Such tremendous creativity, technique, opening ideas and preparation, culture, experience, etc.  Of course, I'm not a strong enough player to truly judge, but when he plays at his best he seems to be leaps and bounds above everyone, barring Carlsen.

I've always felt that his poorer results were the result of health problems and lack of energy than actual chess ability.  On the other hand, health and energy play a huge role, and I doubt that Kramnik will have enough to unseat the young Carlsen.

Perhaps I think that Kramnik is the "best" player on any given day, but over the course of a long match or tournament?  He hasn't been the same since Toilet Gate, and his health problems have been talked about a lot in the past and began in the early 2000s.  It's a shame, really, as I think that he could have been another Karpov or Kasparov, head-and-shoulders above everyone else for a decade or so, but that wasn't to be.

I could be wrong, but that's my take.  Maybe he has more energy and his health under control, but he isn't a 23-year old with boundless energy like Carlsen.  Ahh, to be 23 again...

There's an emotional look in Kramnik's eyes, and around the corners of his mouth, that becomes visible between comments in both the press conference yesterday and the one today. Grim. I think his loss in the last Candidates was agonizing, though he kept his composure in public, and that he is very, very hungry. Today's magnificent 3.e4  game certainly bears that out. An impassioned, determined Kramnik is something to behold.

I dunno. I think he may be licking his chops for when he gets white against those two. He's already shown he can beat Karjakin, who by rating at least, should be more difficult.

My favorite commentator is Svidler, when he's not talking about cricket. Wonder why he's not commenting this time?  Lips Sealed

Splendid game; VK must be a bit peeved watching DA and SM lose like children to his rivals when he has to play like that, but them's the breaks, I guess.

I missed the games but I caught Kramnik's press conference after. He said 23...Nxe3 was the move "in practical terms". Looks like a very interesting double-edged game, good practical chess from Kramnik.

And here is the very interesting QGA game, hot off the presses:

9.a3!? is essentially a novelty (let's not open that can of worms), though iirc it's been analyzed in some places before.  I'll have to dig around to find any notes on this as I'm traveling, though.

23...Nxe3 was something that Benjamin/Har Zvi were looking at. Before RHZ suggested JB go for a break, and there was a baby crying, and the camera kept slipping - got a great belly shot. And I think they preferred 21 Rc1, just holding stuff.

Good to see Kram winning, respect.

That's too bad. I started going through his St Louis lectures in order because they were so good. I especially like the way that when he asks for moves and people supply the "wrong" ones he doesn't just say "No, there's a better move, keep looking" but actually tries to play out a line against the suggestion on the fly. I haven't heard him do live commentary, though.

Some people must dig Finegold, but I find him insufferable.

Most of Ronen's material is very good, but in some of the later lectures I felt he joked around too much, which distracted from the content and was generally unprofessional.  You can hear Finegold off camera kibitzing and talking with him, etc., so I blame him for this.

I can't stand Finegold either, though I did watch a few minutes of a lecture of his with kids, and they seemed to love him.  Entertaining a room full of 5-10 year olds is certainly different than presenting instructional, quality chess, though.

Back on topic, it looks like Kramnik should reel in the full point any minute now.  I'll have to take a close look at that game later!

Perhaps we could share some good links?  Which is the official site, how are people following the games?  I found this:

http://www.chessdom.com/candidates-chess-2014-live/

And this seems to be the official site, which took longer to find than it should have:
http://candidates2014.fide.com/

Any other good links?

Agreed. Took my "ages" to find the official page. Very weird.

I usually watch the games at chessbomb.com. Basically you can watch the board and the 4 best engines lines are giving. Also there is a chat but usually it is full of trolls...

I like Har-Zvi's "advanced" player lectures with the St. Louis Chess Club as he seems to cut through a lot of the crap and get right to the heart of the position, but I haven't seen his live commentary.  On the other hand his more recent lectures seem to have been contaminated by Ben Finegold a bit--oooph.

Agree, K-K very interesting; I used to play that same QGA line for White years ago, though I always took en pessant on move 9.  I'll have to take a closer look at Kramnik's choice--more deep preparation that will change existing theory, or just a one-off surprise?

Thank you for the link, Bibs.

Great comeback by Aronian - 7.Nd2 is an unusual line is it not?
