and 10...Be7 is not even mentioned, only 10...d4 after 10.Bg5.

Anand seems taken aback by 9...Re8.

FWIW, Burgess in his 1.d4 Rep book describes 9...Re8 with "9...Re8 is rare, but by no means bad."

Or staying true to the good old 5...O-O 6. e3 c5! line which McDonald called "energetic and best". I guess it's not as highly regarded by theory but I still love this line  Smiley

I've been wondering if that will make a comeback.  I guess the thing with Be2 instead of Nd2 is still causing Black some consternation.  Watching a game Nyzhnyk-Tarjan a couple of months ago, it seemed that perhaps neither player was aware of that (a possibly relevant fact is that it was Tarjan's first tournament in thirty years).

the line 7.dxc5 Bxc5 8.Qc2 Nc6 9.a3 Qa5 10.Rd1 Be7 11.Be2 is a big theoretical problem for black, out of 13 games played (otb) these last three years (in 365chess database), white scored 13 wins (!)
so this is totally unsuitable to be used as a safe equaliser, which is what a top GM wants if he plays the QGD, also because there are a lot of sharp lines with a kingside pawn storm by white, which are theoretically equal but not really 'safe'

by the way, it's quite remarkable that in older opening books (like McDonald's from 2006) this 11.Be2 move simply does not exist, while it's clearly the most challenging line

Funnily enough we get this line today in Game 8. Carlsen deviated from the critical line by 9..Re8. A very short look into the database gives 71% for white in this line. Interesting to see what the players have prepared. The strongest players in my database have chosen 10. Bg5

Edit: Anand chose 10. Bg5 as well

The one thing that surprised me about today's Berlin game was that Anand created a fortress, then pushed his pawns. He was able to draw the game after some adventures, but wasn't the draw secure without him pushing pawns?

Carlsen's knight was on its way to d5. Once installed there, White could play a later Re7 forcing the rooks off. The GMs were of the opinion that without rooks, Black was lost. Therefore, Anand had to switch from fortress mode to active defense.

Both Anand and Carlsen thought ...b5 was well timed and later Anand was particularly proud of his decision to take on c4. He called it "precise" in the press conference afterwards.

The game yesterday and the comments in the livestream have been very insightful in the endgame phase. I personally learned a lot yesterday Smiley

Anand has found the engines draw 70...bxc4, very impressive, hard move for a human to make.

You mean the engine found Anand's way to draw?
Yes, that's really impressive, more so when some 30 moves ago the very same engine screamed that the Indian had blundered...  Tongue

I have a gut feeling that we see a Slav tomorrow...keeping the wheel of solid 1.d4 defenses turning.

I doubt we'll ever see the Caro-Kann from Anand against Carlsen unless he needs the draw to win the title. Carlsen's a beast when he has an edge in the opening, and the Caro gives White an automatic advantage. The great thing about the Caro is that it's super-solid and that edge usually doesn't amount to much, but it's precisely the wrong opening to play against Carlsen in a match.

The one thing that surprised me about today's Berlin game was that Anand created a fortress, then pushed his pawns. He was able to draw the game after some adventures, but wasn't the draw secure without him pushing pawns?

Tomorrow's (for me, it's "tomorrow") will be fascinating. I do expect Anand to continue with his 1.d4 openings. He has been able to get good positions so far. If he does repeat, I think Carlsen should return to the QID again. It's a risk, but I didn't see how Anand will gain an edge there. So far though, Carlsen has played a different opening each time against 1.d4. Everyone talks about Anand's great opening preparation. Carlsen has been getting the better of the opening battles in every game but one.

3 Whites for Anand in the last 5 games.

In with a great shout here considering Carlsens standard so far.

We could be in for a bit of drama.

I think Anand choosed the wrong opening even though he got a draw.

I think he should try Taimanov sicilian or Caro Kann

Drawn, 1 move short of tying the longest game ever in a World Championship match.

I think both players will be satisfied with this game. Carlsen got an extra piece early on out of the opening and had all the grinding chances and Anand held firm. He appears to be over the game 6 tragedy.

Should be fun tomorrow!

I think Carlsen will be upset for not winning this game, bodes well for Vishy's chances with White tomorrow.

It's a theoretical draw even if Anand blunders both pawns. I think it's time for Carlsen to call it a day.

Not a chance! First drain Anand of all energy before tomorrow's game. Then offer a draw.  Wink

Carslen has sacrificed the b3-pawn just to keep the game going.

Gotta love it.
