Anyone know of this game? It is probably not in databases?

It's pretty safe to say 8 games into the match that Carlsen's "old weakness", namely his "poor" opening prep, can be crumpled up and tossed in the wastebasket. It's not true anymore.

I don't think it was ever true.  He just had a different goal than most modern players: to get a playable and original position.  I would say that his opening preparation for last year's match was fantastic, in that he completely avoided most of Anand's preparation and got positions that suited him.

Most commentators were scrambling to search their databases to find previous games with 9…Re8. The Showalter,J-Janowski,D New York 1898, Thomas,G-Marshall,F London 1927 and Zidu,J (2579)-Wilczek,T (2592) ICCF email 2011 and Correa de Almeida,C (1742)-Manheimer,G (1967) Lechenicher SchachServer 2010 0-1

On the Commentary in Chessbomb, GM Delchev mentioned a game of his (he was white) from 4 years ago:
Quote:
Qc2 Re8 Rare move for the Top Level. I met it for the first time 4 years ago in one of my games, when I considered it as an interesting novelty.
10. Bg5 Be7 Impressive Novelty by Carlsen (In my game there followed 10... d4 11. Bxf6 (11. O-O-O e5 12. exd4 Nxd4 13. Nxd4 Bxd4 14. Nb5 Bg4 (14... Qb6) 15. f3 Be6 16. Kb1 a6 17. Nxd4 exd4 18. Qd2 was played before in Ernst, S-Hoeksema,H /Hoogeveen 2004/ and I believe this is the best for white, although I was then afraid to play this sharp move) 11... gxf6 12. exd4 Nxd4 13. Nxd4 Qxd4 14. Bd3 Qe5+ 15. Kf1 Kg7 16. Re1 Qc7 17. b4 Be7 18. Re3 f5 19. g4 f4 20. Rh3 h6 21. Rh5 Rd8 22. h4 Qd6 23. Rh3 e5 24. Bf5 Be6 25. Qe4 f6 26. g5 and white won with direct attack in Delchev-Elbilia 2010 /French gOP 16/. I had the impression that somewhere around move 14 black may considerably improve their play)

Anyone know of this game? It is probably not in databases?

Interesting Carlsen going back to the old main-line this time and abandoning the trendy 6...Nbd7

well old main-line is the wrong description I suppose, theis ...Re8 business I will have to look at.

Good to see the QGD back in business in so many deifferent ways.

Regarding Black's "nonsense" in that K-K game, I recall some scathing comments about it at the time (perhaps by Raymond Keene, who was one of Korchnoi's seconds), such as (a) that it was more suited to a blitz game than to a world championship, and (b) that while 15. Bc2 suffices for a clear advantage, 15. Bf1 "probably wins out of hand."

Yes, that's the one - bit different, as you say. As you were, then.

I didn't know the game. Thanks for pointing that out. I play the variation (6...c5!) and appearently I am unaware of a lot of historical info and subtleties about it. I'd love to see more black players picking this variation after this game

Only interesting thing coming out of today's press conference was that Magnus admitted to not feeling that great at the start of the game. Sick, maybe?

When asked if he could elaborate further, he simply replied "No."

Didn't this 9...Re8 originate in Korchnoi-Karpov, in Baguio? 1-0, IIRC, with some ...e5...Nd4 nonsense refuted by some calm retreating.

Or was that some other similar position, perhaps?

After how the last game ended, maybe Anand wants to continue 100 moves himself? Just to make a point?  Grin

17...Rad8 on the board, looking like Black has fully adequate play here.

10...Be7 seems to be almost a novelty. Svidler claimed it to be a new move. I find one game between to low rated players (1740 and 1960)
