EVERYONE had buried Anand after game two. I just sat in my chair dumbfounded at that. I know why they said it, but come on!

I would absolutely love to see Anand win this game and prove me completely wrong!

50 minutes ahead on the clock now, and with the better position.

Anand has gone back to blitzing his moves. Looks like he's remembered his opening prep while Carlsen's been thinking.

Carlsen in trouble now, 18...dxe4 would have been better, but this involves an exchange sac: 19.Nd6 Bxd6 20.Bxd6 b3 (20...Re8 21.Bxb4 Qd7 is no fun but probably still playable) 21.Bxf8 Kxf8
there was also the interesting but risky 19...Nc5!?

Game 3 underway.

Anand has succeeded in creating complications that Carlsen has not looked at in prep. 17.Ng5 on the board. Carlsen has been thinking 27 minutes and counting.

This has little to do with openings or psychology, Carlsen is simply better than Anand now, after all Anand could play in Senior WC in 6 years time.

It reminds me of when Vishy was criticised for playing the Centre Counter versus Kasparov in 95 when in fact he got a good position in the opening but got outplayed in the middle game.

early days for predictions

Yes well that is what predictions are all about.

Making statements about how something is going to turn out after it is well established how it is going to turn out is not predicting.

Well, not sure what one can make out of the openings in this match myself, I was just giving predictions

I am not sure that the opening choice matters greatly in this match.

Anand and his team will in most cases be better prepared in the opening:
However Carlsen is the better player and assuming that he gets to an equal(ish) middle game then he will win more games than Anand

My view on openings:

- Some people mentioned that Anand could employ the Sicilian now. Past experience with recent WC matches does not show that. White can choose calm continuations and even if not, Black does run a lot of risks. There are a lot of White games left for Anand to try to recover. Also he may be better prepared in the RL (not only the Berlin). I expect some more 1. e4 e5s to come, before a Sicilian appears on board.

- Good to see 1. e4 played (I thought it was almost dead in WC matches and blamed the influence of the engines). If the Berlin can be bypassed (though must admit that Black looks generally ok in yesterday's opening), then we can hope for more RL main lines. Of course, there is still the Marshall, the Petroff etc.

I suspect the match is over

One more loss and then there is not much left to spectate over except the formality of having to play the games.
...
The match is over, for all intents and purposes,

I have this same feeling that - the match is now essentially over.  Sad

But the biggest reason we suffer this deflating feeling is that we know most of the 12 games will be draws.
If the nature of chess was such that typically only 1 or 2 games would likely end drawn, our feelings about the progress of the current match would not be so deflated.
.

I agree, I was going to write this myself.

A white win against the Berlin defence in game 2 would be historically awesome.

Called it.  Grin

Too bad it wasn't the Berlin Wall proper, but close enough.
