How does man add the name of the user into commentated games? This should be simple, but it prompts me to type in my name for all of my new files when I save them in a databae. There should surely be an easier way to have my name appear as "commentator" in the files rather than typing it each time.

I have my name put on the "User" file in the "Configuation" box, so I do not know why it is not automatically putting my name as commentator.

How also to automatically have the file put the location (city, country) in files?

Lol I am experiencing exactly the opposite. Every time I remove my name as commentator when saving (again) a game. I recently started to use the Fritz 14 GUI but I did not find yet the box where to click on/ off the automatic addition of the commentator.

It does not help that Chessbase only developed a manual for the Fritz 13 GUI but not for the Fritz 14 GUI.

I saw something odd on a database today - flags where the ELO rating would be (except that neither player had a rating). I managed to remove them by clicking on 'F2' then 'Rating' and clicking one of the boxes, but I'm curious to know why they appeared in the first place - does it mean you can assign a rating for each different country a player plays in?

Now I think it has something to do with the 'Type differs' box in the 'Rating' tab, so presumably you can click this and have, say, a German rating for one player, and a British rating for another, with the respective flags.

Actually, I've only just got around to using CB12 instead of CB10 (as I didn't like the ribbon very much) mainly because the analysis functions are improved (for a lot of games you can analyse with, say, Stockfish, and see what other engines have analysed at the same time) ... and then CB13 arrives!

I've been using CB13 quite a bit recently and I like it a lot! Smiley

How can I uninstall a database from ChessBase 12?

From the main Chessbase screen press the right button of your mouse while you are on the database you want to remove. Then find "Remove database symbol" or alike and press on it. That's all. Just make sure you didn't press "delete..."!  Wink
"Remove..." is the way to go..

I don't think I need a list now, I seem to recall seeing one somewhere at the CB site, but can't figure out where now. Anyway, here is a link to a small article about some of the differences. The author may be familiar to some of you  Wink

I've only just noticed that there is now a picture and flag by the players when you open a game, which is neat, I can't remember seeing that before.
I can copy the complete list of 'What's New' features from the ChessBase13 PDF file if anyone is interested?

Thanks, Tony for pointing out the differences. I was mainly considering the upgrade for the increased analysis functions, and for the cloud functions, which I don't critically need. But I think the idea of being able to access my databases everywhere even without my computer is of course a good idea! However, it doesn't seem to be available yet, which lead me to decide on postponing the upgrade.

I already have CB12, but was thinking of buying CB13.

Apart from the cloud functions (which I certainly don't need) and improved analysis functions, there are quite a few minor improvements according to the CB13 Manual: the Toolbar in the Notation window looks as though it could prove useful, apparently entering moves is now easier, etc.
Nothing mind-boggling, but maybe just enough to want to upgrade. However, it did crash when I first used it, but hopefully they will have soon ironed out any bugs.

The commercial products definitely have features that Scid does not; the question is whether or not you have any real use for them. I have Chess Assistant and Aquarium along with Scid vs. PC. I have played around with them a bit, but ultimately I found that Scid does most of what I want and often does it a bit better. For example, I really prefer the way Scid approaches trees (creating them in real time).

There are two features in CA/Aquarium that I miss in Scid. The first is IDeA, which Scid obviously can't match at all. Of course, this is really only interesting to those who want to do very serious, high-powered analysis using a complicated process. But for those people there is nothing comparable in Scid. The other thing is much less significant. When I create files of tactics problems or endgame positions, I sometimes want to be able to change the order of games in a database based on no criteria other than my own preferences. Obviously, Scid can sort a database according to game fields, but there is no way to easily swap, say, games 23 and 24 in a database. You essentially have to use a series of steps involving changing the filter and using clipbase. I sometimes export to CA if I want to make a number of such changes.

Beyond that I prefer Scid vs. PC, even though I already own the other programs and cost is no longer an issue. Of course Chessbase may be a step up from CA and I can't speak to that one way or another.

I believe the search capabilities are better in cb than in scid. For example when searching for a series of moves, in chessbase you can tell it to search over a certain range in ply so there could be intermediate moves that aren't part of your search. scid currently doesn't have that. I have a patch locally that I have been testing to add something like that to scid. Currently it only allows you to add a ? to the sequence to say I don't care what this move is. Scid also doesn't allow you to specify the side making the move, like in cb you would put something like wNxc5.

I haven't spent a lot of time with the other search bits in scid yet. I also haven't looked to see how/if it handles transpositions or how the search for position code works.
