Well, for one you can't use the playable eBooks we produce. Sad

I work as a computer analyst and word almost exclusively with open source products. And I use scid, of course (I have to admit that I have a free CBLight to convert cbv files to pgn). I'm not a chess proffessional and I don't doubt there are specific functionalities that are not in scid. But for me it's absolutely enough with scid.

Sorry for the offtopic  Wink

No problem at all! I have mainly tried Scid on the go for Android, and just briefly tried Scid for PC. I have thought about testing it more extensively, but just got stuck with CB. Maybe someone else here can answer what differences there are between the two programs?

I already have CB12, but was thinking of buying CB13. Mainly for the possibility to access the databases via the cloud. However, it is only said that this will be available in the future, which sounds very vague..

You don't need CB13 to keep your databases in the cloud. I keep mine in Dropbox and use it to access my databases from a couple different computers. Same with my Chess Openings Wizard and Chess Position Trainer databases.

I keep mine in Dropbox too. But to access them I need CB on all computers. Chessbase have refused to release an app for that use. I guess it partly is technology-problems, but also because they now have it in CB13, which forces you to buy it if you want that feature on e.g. a phone. The idea with CB13 now is that they will release support for use in browsers and phones without the need of an installation of CB on the same device.

I have refused to buy any of Adobe's subscription, but I guess it'll get to a point when there are no other alternatives available from them

There are plenty of decent alternatives to Acrobat, some free, some not. None of them are quite as good, but it depends on what you need.

Sorry, I wasn't clear enough in the previous remark. I mainly meant Photoshop, Illustrator and Lightroom. I use and have used the programs frequently.

I really like open source, but I have gotten used to e.g. CB12 now. It would take some time to re-adjust. Same for Office vs Open Office. There are some small things I'd miss. Of course, the price for those is pretty high. I really hate the subscription programs too. I have refused to buy any of Adobe's subscription, but I guess it'll get to a point when there are no other alternatives available from them  Angry

Watch for a yearly subscription cost next I suppose....
(See Adobe etc.).

Yes, I really hate this, I like to buy a product and then use it for many years (let's face it, most upgrades add very little).
I have started moving over to open-source products to avoid paying subscriptions, and to be perfectly frank they are nearly as good as their expensive rivals.

At the very least the upgrade to CB13 is available here as a DVD:

Also: there's no upgrade path BigBase, while there is for MegaBase. So if you wanted the new program and the new (big) database, it'd be €99.90 + €59.90 and you could download both immediately. The Starter package, which is basically the same save three issues of CBM, is €179.90 and you have to wait for it to arrive via post.

Both the upgrade and download packages are only available from chessbase.com (to my knowledge) and are downloadable; the starter is boxed and not available for download.

With the Starter you get a copy of BigBase 2015. You do not get that with the Download or Upgrade versions.

At least on Chess4Less.com, the upgrade is $60 cheaper than the Starter package. Perhaps the actual cost on CB's website is screwed up?

They must reckon they've got a captive market, and enough will upgrade at full price whatever they do, so no need to offer a cheap upgrade Sad

CB's pricing was always strange. Wink
My guess is that they're not interested in people buying the upgrade. Why would you convert your old installations to new CB 13 keys when you could keep the old ones, for example to use on your son's PC, and get new keycodes for the same price ?!
