He gives the Vienna Game against 1...e5, focusing/rehabilitating the line 1.e4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.f4 d5 4.fe5 Ne4 5.Qf3, and after examining his analysis I think it could be a successful Blitz and Rapid weapon or an occasional surprise weapon at longer time controls.

Against the Alekhine he does not intentionally recommend a system, but a careful review of his Black Repertoire proves that the Modern Variation is quite promising for White as long as he finds the exchange sacrifices in two key lines. Spoiler Alert, subscribers will probably know that at least one of these exchange sacs was suggested by former ChessPublishing columnist, Gawain Jones, in the notes to a game in one of his monthly updates.

Nothing is offered against the Pirc/Modern setups or Scandanavian, and he puts forward the reason that it would have made the book too long, and to include them would have meant cutting back on the depth of analysis on the lines actually covered. He also makes the argument that you will face the Sicilian, 1...e5, Caro and French most often in your games. Prospective buyers will have to decide for themselves whether the quality and depth of analysis claimed compensates for the incomplete repertoire.

Happy New Year all Smiley

Anyone know what the author gives against the alechine, modern/pirc, and e5 as white? I saw the table of contents but I thought I saw lines against the French, Sicilian, and Caro.

Agreed.

I'm not going to merge this into the main thread though because it would interrupt the current conversation.

Sorry, but it is kinda weird to start a new thread when there is another one on the same topic, and the thread was at the top in this subsection.

In the contents, it gives the line 1.e4 e6 2.♘f3 d5 3.♘c3 ♘f6 4.e5 ♘bd7, and apparently spends 20 pages on it, but I would just play 5. ef! ++- (TN). I don't think much of that line, but the other lines in the contents list look intriguing, especially the Alekhine's and Queen's Gambit 1. d4 d4 2. c4 dc 3. e3 Be6. I've ordered it and will see when it arrives.

This book looks interesting - http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/9056916033/ref=dra_a_sm_lb_ho_it_P1400_1000?tag=dradi...

Sveshnikov is a controversial author and I hope that he will have something interesting to say about how to open in blitz and rapid.
